Dale says that he’s managed to collect
250 dollars from subscribers, in honor of
the president’s request to congress for
money to support our stay in Iraq.
Let me make a suggestion:
we might donate
the money to a charity (one without any political
slant or subtext) that is bringing needed services
to ordinary folks in Iraq, especially children.
I will second Jerry’s proposal above, this is a very humanitarian organization that doesn’t have a political agenda attached to it, except to go where no other organization will go.
I think we should let him buy the tiger he wants. In case he can’t because of this petition he should feel free to use it to buy whistles to review, or beer, or donate to Republicans Without Scruples, or whatever.
I concur! Dale should hold it until he sees a need and donate/use it on behalf of C&S. The trouble with giving it to an organization like Doctors Without Borders or any other mega-charity is that a piddling little amount like that will do nothing significant in their hands but might make a major difference in the hands of a struggling local charity.
The size of the charitable operation does not reduce it beneficiaries to nonentities (or shouldn’t). One more case of antibiotics could save twenty or thirty lives. Does the fact that an organization is effectively saving thousands of lives make those additional twenty or thirty lives meaningless?
Lots of children in the third world die of dysentary,
due to dehydration. There are saline kits that enable
parents to hydrate the child, teaspoons of saline
enable the child to absorb water. The kits cost
about a dollar a piece. So I figure that 250 dollars in
the right hands might save 200 lives.
This is just a suggestion, please remember.
The Iraq connection
makes sense, I thought, because it pertains to how the
money was collected. But other suggestions
may be as good or better.
I’m sure Dale doesn’t mind. Best
I agree about the Iraq connection. I don’t know of a suitable charity that focuses specifically on Iraq, however. I do know that Doctors Without Borders works in places where conflicts have disrupted access to medical care and created health crises generally. I’ll check and see if a donation to Doctors Without Borders can be earmarked for Iraq.
I was getting ready to write an email to Doctors Without Borders asking whether we could earmark a donation for Iraq when it occurred to me, if we earmark the money, it would go where we’ve preconcieved it “should” go. However, if we just give them the money without any preconditions, we can assume they’ll make every effort to use it wherever the need is greatest. So I’m inclined to just let it be.
What do y’all think?
(My assumption here is that we’re brainstorming a suggestion for Dale. He may have other ideas, as well.)
