Question about smallpipes (I known we are in UP site )but some help
needed. I’m lucky to choose free smallpipe from A,D or Bp set.
So what " basic pitch" is best if you want also to play different pitch just changing chanter=enough drone capacity to adjust tuning.

My small pipes/cauld wind pipes are in the key of A. It seemed the most versatile. Eric Rigler has both an A and a D chanter but he has told me that he rarely uses his D.
