A few months ago my mother bought me a bamboo flute from some shop in China Town NYC. It’s not very large it has 2 embochoure (sp) holes in it. One of which (the one closer to the finger holes) I covered up because no sound comes out when they’re both open. It also has two holes down near the bell end of the flute they’re side by side and on the underside of the flute, so I’m guessing these are for tuning. It is however Lowd as Hell. It will play lowder than my Waltons High D “green top” but the air requirements are tremendous in the 2nd register. The notes in the lower register come out on my tuner as this (lowest to highest) A,B,C#,D,E(almost completely flat, something like 40% flat)F#. Now I know 2 sharps is the Key of Dmaj but this is definatley not D maj. It’s not a high Flute, the A is the same note as the 5 hole on a Low D whistle.
Well, assuming the E is supposed to be E natural and not E flat, it could be in the key of A. That would give you the bell note of A, and that key has three sharps: F, C, and G.
Loud you mean? snicker Poor old cyffy…

This sounds like a Dizi. The 2nd hole (closer to the fingers) is meant to be covered with a bit of garlic skin or the like to cause the characteristic chinese buzzing sound.
It has some chinese writing on it above the embochoure. Near the A hole (snikers) there’s the letter “A” and near the D hole theres a letter “D” when you blow into the HOle that’s closer to the fingers the flute is realy high, but if you leave it uncovered and blow into the Normal embochoure with the second one is uncovered no sound comes out at all.

Right, you need to cover the hole near the fingers…i use scotch tape, because I don’t like the traditional buzzing sound. But traditionally, you’d use onion skin, or rice paper or the like..see here

That’s what I did. I just put a piece of tape over the second hole. It sounds ok I guess a Bit screachy in the upper register, but I’m not anything close to an expierienced flute player, but hey I can make sounds come out besides wind hissing, so I have a one up on a lot of people ![]()
