Chiff is a wool-like material, used as packing. Quite popular in the U.K., it has fallen from favor with the advent of plastic bubble wrap. Bronze-age civilizations used chiff for warmth in clothing. Young persons who snuck off to make woo in Scotland were said to be “out looking for the Chiff”. When originally invented, tin whistles had an absolutely pure tone, due to the skill of the makers. However, some players wanted a softer tone, so they packed the whistle head with Chiff. Although commonly gathered from the Irish Chiff weasel, it can also be found in the U.S. on the endangered Spotted Chiff Marmoset. Dale considered changing the web site name from “Chiff and Fipple” to “Popping-the -Bubble-Wrap-because-it’s-more-fun and Fipple”, but he had difficulty fitting this on the home page in the required larger font. Go ahead, ask me what a fipple is… heh heh heh
