What is your chosen profession? Although, I realize that this shouldn’t matter, Larry, you may be in a profession which already carries a certain stigma with it. They are most likely reacting to a past experience from someone else in your profession, and hitting you in your soft spot: your love for music and piping.
Aside from the fact that the percentage of just plain fools and idiots is rising.

Larry, you and I are in different fields of the same profession, but I’ve never run into people bad-mouthing me for piping. I do take a fair amont of ribbing - the usual “what do you wear under your kilt, do you wear that funny skirt” kind of thing. Which leads then to the obligatory discussion of the difference between GHB and the UP which no one ever understands anyway.

This reminds me of a time I was flying from London to Dublin and two English “businessmen” were sitting in the seats in front of me. All they spoke about the for entire flight (50 minutes) was about how they were going to walk all over the “Thick Mick” and that “Paddy wouldn’t understand” their business plan and therefore just sign anything.
I’m telling you, this is about five years ago and I still remember it very clearly. I’m very proud of the fact that I didn’t go balistic on them. I was looking around to see if anyone else could hear them but my fellow passengers just kept their heads down so as not to “disturb the peace”.
I thought this type of attitude had gone the way of the dodo, I felt like I was in the 19th century with these “gentlemen” slagging off the very people that were feeding and clothing them. Sick. I don’t lose my temper normally but that day my blood was truly boiling.
Anyway… back to our scheduled programming…

NB: this incident probably has more to do with the “type” of people these guys were rather then the fact that they were English. They may speak like this about everyone they deal with???

Some people have nothing to worth while to say and resort to becomming smarta**es filled with witless reparte and single entendre. If they can’t understand it they laugh at it. Pay them no mind.
As to the what do you where under the kilt question; I have to standard answers:
1 Why shoes and socks, of course!
2 If the questioner is cute: Why don’t you reach up and find out?
