Yeah, I haven’t bought a sweetone yet. I was considering getting an entire set of whistles (high)… any other brands do that besides Generations?
Is this a wise move?

If you don’t go play around with other musicians who plays different keys, IMO you will end up with some that your would never play.
Thats y i didnt buy a set.
I can really recommend the Syn set. 8 bodies from (low) A to (high) E (A, Bb, B, C, C#, D, Eb, E). I really like the D, C and Bb, but all the others are very good too! It’s $170 for the complete set, a bit expensive maybe, but for me it’s worth it! You can’t find the complete set in online stores, but you can contact Erle Barlett directly to order it from him, his mailadress is on this forum somewhere I think, if not, you can PM me. There are also other Syn sets available C/D/Eb, C/D, and what would be a nice one to start with I think is the Bb/C/D for about $115 at BWM.
Reyburn. Please, do your homework. Best.
CranberryDog… uh, thanks? You tell me to “Please, do my homework,” and you didn’t even read that I have a price ceiling of $90 (american).
Sorry, gotta laugh at that, lol.
The Generation Bb is a very nice whistle, and it is almost a low whistle.
I like what Tommy says: the Gen Bb is very nice, and much lower than your D. I found that mine liked to be played VERY softly in the lower octave, and pushed more in the higher octave.
When I read your posts, I was thinking, “Why does it have to be a low D?” Personally (and this is just me) when I tried a low D whistle, I didn’t like it. Too deep, too much air. But I love my two Bb whistles.
Also, do you have to get a lot of whistles or a set at once? I find the fewer whistles I play, the better I get to know them–how they like to be played. (Yes, my whistles talk to me)
Thanks guys!
I’m taking your advice! I’m going to buy a Generation Bb whistle, as well as, a Tweaked Clarke Sweetone, and an ocarina.
Do you prefer the brass or nickel Bb? The whistle stop only has the nickel whistle in stock.
Thanks!!!
I have the nickel one and I like it very much. People say the sound is pretty similar between both.
Go for it!
At the price of Gens you’ll end up with a coffee mug full of these like the rest of us. ![]()
Go for it, and have a blast!!
Seeing as you mentioned that you like Clarkes, I’d say consider getting a Shaw. I was lucky enough to get two for Christmas (A and low G) and they are both absolutely gorgeous, very warm and breathy sounding. They’re extremely similar to Clarke whistles, same conical bore and wooden fipple & to me they basically sound how I imagine a low Clarke would sound.
About a Generation B flat having low volume in the low register, it depends on which top you use. I have a collection of 5 or 6 Generation B flat tops and they all play differently. (Each was carefully selected from among many others.) Some have a strong low register, some weak. Some have sweet high notes, others shrill high notes. Each top imposes a different sort of tuning on the same whistle body.
I’m currently using the top with the strongest low register- the “bottom D” is very powerful.
About low D whistle fingerspacing, I’ve either owned or tried about 7 or 8 makes of low D’s in the last six months and they’re all pretty much the same. They all represent a compromise between the laws of acoustics and human anatomy. My keyless Susato low D is no wider in spacing than the others, likewise my keyless Susato low C.
