What is this?

There is a flowered whistle on eBay at http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2504164679&category=624

Anyone know anything about it?

To me, it looks like a bamboo whistle, maybe from India, though it could really be from anywhere.

Looking at the size and spacing of the tone holes, I think it probably would only approximate a Western scale.

Now I know this comment may sound strange coming from me, but I would think the seller’s comment about “great for invoking the Element of Air” translates roughly to “not recommended for use as a musical instrument.”

All that being said, I have some cane whistles I bought in Hot Springs during our honeymoon a few years ago. They actually play pretty well, but they are narrower than the one pictured here, don’t have the decoration, and have pretty normally sized and spaced tone holes. They aren’t great for intonation, but they do play at least a recognizable scale for two octaves–and they have sentimental value exceeding their objective worth, of course.

If you go to the seller’s ebay store, there are many items that are hippie related: cannabis leaf pendant, lovebeads, Incense and cool and groovy velvet stuff. The whistle (which sells for £1.00) IMO is suspect  But sure looks freaky cool man! Like the hipppie whistle player says, inhale before ya exhale

Ya gotta remember, to a lot of folks, being a musician is enough to make you a hippie.

E-bay, the world’s biggest head shop! :stuck_out_tongue:

I think Hippyism is making a big comeback. There is actually a store in Promenade Mall called, The Hippy Store. All it sells is hippy paraphernalia!

Could be a resurgence due to the fact there’s a lot of Baby Boomers who are still lost in the '60s… like myself!!
