Is a concert D the same as a low D? A soprano?
A concert D is a tunable soprano D that is suitable, in terms of craftsmanship, tone, etc. for concert performances. Examples are O’Riordan, Overton, Copeland, and Burke.
Concert D would have to do with the pitch (i.e. orchestral pitch of 440 cycles per second for a above middle c is the standard orchestral concert pitch).
I go with Teri-K on this…
Notes played on a ‘concert’ instrument would correspond with a piano. So, fingering a ‘G’ would sound a ‘G’ note. No transposing would be required.
Having a ‘Concert D’ instrument means your lowest note is D. It has nothing to do with the ‘quality’ of the instrument.
Well, Tony and Teri-K are right. Concert = tuned to 440 Hz A.
As for craftmanship not being a factor, though, I have to disagree. I think good craftsmanship is required to get a whistle that will consistently produce a 400 Hz A, with all the other notes being in tune, too. If a Waltons or a Generations whistle could do this, you could say that it is a concert whistle, but I don’t see that happening.
~ Thornton
Generations MUST be quality instruments then, since so many of the revered players use them.
Close enough for folk music!
Actually I confess that sometimes
inexpensive whistles are more in tune,
at least internally, than some of
the expensive ones.
I really don’t know whether generations
and Oaks are or aren’t at concert pitch–and
they are tunable. Unwilling to just
suppose they are not. I mean one gets
an internally in-tune tube (which is
doable in a cheap whistle)
and places the head so that
the whistle is in tune. Is there
evidence that these whistles aren’t
(or can’t be) in concert pitch?
The first time I heard the label “concert” applied to a whistle, it was for an O’Riordan model soprano D with a delrin fipple, hardwood tube, and metal fittings. I don’t remember any of the other makers using this label as part of a model name.
Teri is right, Concert pitch is the term used for instruments pitched in D (which today is A=440, older cocert pitch instruments are in what we now think of a s Csharp. The term is is widely used in Uilleann piping: a concert set as in a D set.
Solely pitch related, workmanship no consideration as most concert pipes are Horrible!![]()
