what exactly is "focus" and what to look for?

as I am a fairly new player I am still in the experimenting stages with the flute.
I am wondering what exactly “focus” is, and how do you get “good” focus…is there a way to check.

I have seen the discussion earlier, with the condensation pattern pictures…that has been helpful.
still, although my condensation pattern is centered, it is still a bit on the wide side.

is focus, getting this as small as possible.
or am I looking in the wrong direction and is it something completely different?

Berti - that’s a good question. I’m fairly new, too (a little over 2 years on flute), but I think a focused embouchure is as small as possible and that gets the good sound. So your condensation pattern will likely be smaller with a focused embouchure.

For me, focus means aiming for and getting precise consistency in getting a particular tone color per note each and every time (one hopes!). There are tones that require more relaxation depending on your flute and where you are within the compass of it. Tighten the lips, or make the air jet smaller, or alter lip positioning, and the tone changes. So focus for me has a lot to do with muscle memory -born of observant practice- and using it for what I get out of it.

Playing in front of a mirror has helped me to keep the proper angle to obtain good focus.
