Don’t know about samples, but if you want to call me, I can play a Bass recorder for you over the phone! It is actually a very quiet instrument an octave LOWER than a low G whistle.
not feasible as i’m in Malaysia…heh.
But i’ve never heard of bass recorders before so thats why I’m interested.
What about the bamboo saxaphone i’ve seen in songsea.com?
what would that sound like??
Bamboo sax?
http://www.xaphoon.com/
sound samples are on the website
I can make a sound sample of a bass recorder for you,
but it will have to wait until the weekend.
I don’t know what the bamboo saxes from songsea sound like, but I was at a ren fair this past weekend and Eric from www.eriktheflutemaker.com was there selling his bamboo flutes, whistles and saxes. I thought the saxes sounded absolutely incredible and would have bought one on the spot. The problem is that bamboo saxes are limited (at least the ones I seen) to a one octive range. Overblowing and putting extra pressure on the reed can get you a few extra notes, but the range was just too limited for what I wanted.
If anyone knows of any bamboo saxes with a greater range, I’d love to know about them.
managed to find a few samples including bass recorder

Wow! the xaphoons sound really good!
but they look different from the ones on songsea.com
Mike, did you go to the Scottish Festival in Pembroke Pines?
It was the South Florida Renaissance Fair in Quiet Waters Park. I didn’t know there was a Scottish festival or I’d have been sure to check it out.
I didn’t know about the Ren Fair…
The Scottish Festival was at CB Smith park this past
weekend. I had a last minute change of plans and
didn’t get to go.
Thank you Chaudan for the link. I have just bought an Angel Bass recorder, which I know isn’t one of the best ones but it was within my price range, and apart from the fact that I damaged the cork on the crook straight away I like the sound of it. The mp3 files will be great to play along to. ![]()
the xaphoon has a 2 octave range
I noticed that, thanks. I was in the process of typing my initial reply at the same time Tony posted his link to the xaphoon. When I saw the link, I went and took a look. It looks pretty cool and sounds great. I may have to try out one of the plastic jobs (the pocket sax) and see how it sounds.
You can hear sound samples of all the recorder family instruments at:

The real question is, “What does a bass recorder look like?”
I am, finally, able to provide the answer:
C&F presents the Bloody Hand dancing bass recorder…

Some Bass Recorders are bent at the tuning joint, Yamaha is a good example of this. Usually in the key of F.
Bass Recorders have a great variation in sound from one brand to another - most of them have two to four keys depending on design.
My prototype bass whistle is in the key of ‘C’, (octave below low-C)
recorders usually called something in this range a ‘Great Bass Recorder’. Between 4 and 5 foot tall.
wow, the great bass recorder sounds so unlike any recorder i’ve ever heard. but the volume is so soft
yeah, i’m gonna get the pocket sax too
The low recorder, the very noise of the angels!

Hi Chaudan, I have a clip of myself playing a Shaw Low D on ‘tinwhistle tunes’- http:// tinwhistletunes.com/clipssnip/new.html It was the first clip I ever sent in, a ‘version’ of the slow air ‘Eanach Chuin’. Please excuse my lousy playing, nor is this a stab at self promotion(
) but it’s the only clip of a Shaw low D that I’ve heard. They do take a bit of air,as you can probably tell, but I don’t think that my breathing was as controlled as it is now when I recorded this.Shaws certainly have a sort of ‘rustic charm’-I certainly like the look of them, even if I don’t play the Shaw so much now.I look forward to comparing the Shaw to the Copeland Low D that I have on order-This should be quite interesting as they are both conical bore instruments. * No I couldn’t manage that technical hyperlink stuff- just follow the site link from this board! ![]()
