i searched in the archives but didn’t find anything specific on this. i tried one of these Susato Angled Head low d’s this weekend. i seemed pretty good. but as i don’t know the low d yet, i was wondering if people could share their opinions about this whistle.
As someone who has broken the fourth and fifth fingers of his right hand a couple of times, and who also bought a Susato D with the straight head and is finding that those are just about the worst two fingers to have limited mobility in when playing a low D, I, too, would be interested in knowing more about the angled head, to wit:
-
Since it allows the whistle body to be held more vertically, does it really, as Susato claims, make it easier to play?
-
Will the other whistle players make fun of it?
The angled head has really caught on for bass recorders. This sparked a controversy in the so-called recorder community, as some recordists felt them historically unauthentic.
I doubt that people playing Susatos are terribly interested in looking historically authentic, and I, personally, really like the look of the bent neck.
And now, if someone would only give me a bent-neck Susato, I could review it. ![]()
