It would be nice to have a somewhat smaller flute to carry around and play whenever the world is looking too dark and dreary. As the piccolos and D fifes sound very shrill, I was thinking of a G folk fife made by Ralph Sweet. Is this a good choice?
I`ve never played one of Ralphs flutes but I have a few flutes in G. They are great fun to play. One is a blackwood tube, not conical bore, that will blast the bricks off of buildings. One is a plastic tunable that is ok and a couple of bamboo. All of them are very powerful and yet can be played quitely if preferred. They have pretty large holes as well as a large emboucher and are quite easy to play. One of these days I have to get my hands on one of Ralphs flutes. Anyway I would say go for it.

I have a G Sweet in Rosewood and it is a lovely flute.
It isn’t shrill, it has a fine sound. It isn’t too high.
Let me suggest one in Rosewood. The other woods
(except for blackwood, which costs more) are
softer (apple, maple, walnut). Rosewood has
a professional sound.
My daughter has one. It’s very nice and so is the price but it not being in D means it doesn’t go to the session.
I have never played his G Flutes but his D Flutes and Piccolos are very nice. I have a PVC in G and I love the key.
Right. But you can play in G and in C. I play with
people who often play (and sing) in C.
