While we’re talking about unusual music (in instrumental context) I just heard the US Army Brass Quintet do “The Flight of the Bumblebee” samba style with trombone solo on the greatest show on public radio, “Prairie Home Companion” with Garrison Keillor about a week ago LIVE in DC! Wow! Here’s a link: http://prairiehome.publicradio.org/programs/2004/05/29/
go to segment 2 and hold on to your hats!
Actually the tuba is a fairly adgile instrument. At least decent ones are. The breath requirements are a big deal sometimes though. I never got to where I could put out a convincing Flight of the Bumblebee, but I worked up Yakkity Sax on tuba once upon a time.
Oh, sorry, I meant, uh…Tube-or. Remember all those He-man charactors from years back? Skelet-or? There was even one action figure called Stink-or. Tube-or!
Does anyone here know what a contra bass bugle is? I was a contra bass bugle-or back years ago. Also a baritone bugle-or. I own a soprano , mellophone and french horn bugle too. Uh…anyone ever hear of Boa disorder? A mind is a terrible thing to waste. Unless you can sell it on Ebay.
Remember The “Gong Show” with Chuck Willary? (I think that was his name) I saw a tuba quartet go on and they started ripping into a high energy tune. I thought they were pretty good, it may have been the Tubadours, they were gonged in about ten seconds and then chased off the stage. I believe that humans may have a genetic disposition to hate tubas, or at least a genetic disposition to make fun of them. That’s probably why I played one for 20+ years, I enjoyed the
abuse. Maybe the reason I play whistle now is that it’s a form of psychological backlash.
Oh, I’ll go with V.B’s “Tube-or”, like “Skeletor”, but for the tuba!
