I know that this is probably a question that a lot of people ask but I was just wondering on your opinion about some low D whistles. I have been playing the soprano whistles for about 2 years and have decided to branch off to new horizons (and instruments). I am a big fan of the inexpensive conical Clarke whistle, because of it’s breathy tone.
I have been researching the low D’s and have discovered that the Shaw whistle is the closest to this. I have also inquired about the Howard whistles and the Ralph Cook whistles.
For right now, it seems that everyone has their preference and the names of many whistles have been suggested. I just don’t know what to get now. There are so many options.
Yes, the options and preferences can be confusing. But my limited experience is get what YOU like. A very close friend of mine also plays, but we have divergent preferences in whistles.
I own two Shaws and a Ralph Cook set (with flute head). I happen to love the Shaws, and I’m falling for the Cooks as I learn to play them (piper fingering is NOT intuitive!)
Unfortunately, Mr. Cook retired from making whistles before I could order one, so I obtained my set second-hand from a fellow C&Fer.
But for the tone and price, the Shaws are a good bet. I have no first-hand experience with Howards.
