what did everyone do this weekend?

i finally decided to give the silver flute a go. it’s going ok.

How far did you drive it!

Anstapa

Is it still going? :boggle:

Good for you!
What was it that made you decide to?

I’m doing something new this weekend-- I’m hand raising a new species of bird. The neighbor accidentally knocked down a mourning dove nest yesterday, with 2 chicks. The parents seem to be looking after the older chick but not the younger one, so I’ve taken it on. (I really need to get that wildlife rehab licence).

I’ve raised parroty things and finchy things but never anything dove-like. Their chicks feed with a different technique, and we’re just not working very well together. Food is getting in but it’s slow and very messy.

Here’s our theme song

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23UkIkwy5ZM&mode=related&search=

Baby dove
oh baby dove
I feed ‘ya
oh I feed ‘ya
but none of it is goin’ in
it’s all dribblin’ down your chin
don’t throw that food away

dang it, dang it, dang it, dang it

I hope your fluting is going better than my dove-ing.
At least I’m pretty sure that yours is less messy

I went to the ER. I’m sick. I’m leaving the state of Kentucky for a while in a couple days, so I’ll have to wait to have surgery on my throat until later next month, probably aroudn the time classes start back. So most people will be walking around with new books and backpacks and beautiful clothes, and I’ll have a big white bandage on my throat. It already makes me laugh. It’s not life-threatening, thank God.

Yes, you do! It’s illegal to rehab without a liscence, but..uh…I’ve done it for years. It’s one of those laws that people don’t enforce, I’ve found.

For example, it’s illegal to have a crow as a pet, but it’s PERFECTLY LEGAL to shoot them down dead. However, the authorities I know who can enforce the law (well, the authority, since she’s just one woman) don’t enforce it because of the apparent nonsensicalness.

Cool deal!

Good luck with that!

Curiosity…do you have your own flute, or are you renting / borrowing?

thanks for the encouragement. i was given a silver flute by a nun about two years ago. she passed away this past year. (when she was still alive, you should have seen me sweating when she was expected to come back into town and i hadn’t polished the flute and it was tarnished completely. then i had to order a silver cleaning cloth and time was running out.)

i’m learning to play it, not just for her but the only irish flutes that i have are not in standard tuning and i’d like to play the flute with the folk group. it’s taken me so long to get started because i accidently taught myself to play the whistle left-handed and it’s taken me a year on and off to even be able to hold the thing comfortably right-handed. it finally came to me this weekend.

also, my wife will not let me buy another instrument (even for her) until i learn the silver flute.

back to the baby pigeon. i think baby birds are the ugliest creature in the world. grown up bird are beautiful. the most ugliest creature in the world is an alive opposum. even dead possums look better than alive ones.

Now how could you possibly think that? :astonished:

I figured out something that’s bothering me about this one. All the other birds I’ve worked with have had a little curve to their beaks that makes them look like they are smiling. Sort of like the “smile” that a dolphin has. This one though, his beak actually makes a frowny face! :frowning: And his eyes aren’t almond shaped like I’m used to, but perfectly round, and absolutely huge compared to his teeny-tiny head.

It looks like he is staring at me in horror :astonished: and dissappointment :frowning:

“Sheesh, kid, whaddya want, I’m doing the best I can”

Noah and I just got back from seeing the latest Harry Potter movie.

I went to see the Ayrshire Fiddle Orchestra, their site: http://www.fiddleorchestra.com/
The AFO is a collection of dedicated young people, age 10 to 18, who come together to keep alive the traditional music of Scotland.

Man, what a hoot that was. The kids were excellent musicians, polite, and also had a terrific time. Every few years the Scotland based group goes on an International tour. Mostly fiddles as one might expect from their name, but they did mix in one whistle led tune, and one accordian led tune, as well as two vocals with solo piano, and one dance number.

The AFO was founded to keep the tradition of Scottish fiddle playing alive and well. They will celebrate their 25th anniversary this Christmas in Glasgow.

Cheers.

P. S. Sorry to hear, Cran had to go to the hospital. Get better soon.

P.P.S. I spent some time on various whistles this afternoon. Something I’ve sadly neglected as the flute requires more time.

Well???
reviews were good, but what did you guys think of it?

It was good - but we were both somewhat disappointed in the things that were left out, and somewhat disappointed in the things that were “invented” for the movie. I know it’s hard to get a 700 page book into 2 hours, but there was a LOT of character development that was left out. The movie just seemed to “skim” the surface of the book without every really getting into it.

Of course - we are both just waiting for the next book to come out!!!

i’ve managed not to read the books even though my wife and the boys she used to babysit have read every word aloud to each other. we made it to the first showing that we all could make it too. we disregarded the midnight showing. since i only know the movies, i think it was grand.

they’re even uglier when they’re wet…dont ask me how I know.
My weekend; gig, gig, catch some twinkies thrown off the ‘bastille’ by marie antonette, drink, eat greek food ,drink, gig; and thru it all…sweat like a turkey covered with a pigskin in an oven …

I like possums. I raised 4 orphans once, then released them when they were old enough to fend for themselves. But then, my grandma read to me from this book when I was a young’un. It was one of my favorites and I still have it, only mine is from the 1920s so it’s not in color like this one. But this picture is one of the originals-(uncle billy was a scoundrel, here he’s gotten in the hen house and is suckin’ an egg)

I like possums! They’re cute, and a lot more pleasant to have around than raccoons!

We didn’t do much this weekend, as we’re getting ready to go on vacation next weekend.

Redwolf

Just got home from the NASCAR races in Joliet, IL. Gorgeous weather, not too hot thank God, and good times with some of my family. And I didn’t get sunburned!

I took seven new kayakers down the river yesterday on their first long journey, from Lake St.Clair to Amherstuburg. Throwing in water rescues, wet exits, followed by single unassisted recoveries. They now have sore backs, stiff legs and aching shoulders but it was a lot of fun.

On Saturday, I bought a used student grade Clarinet, it needs some work but looking forward to giving it a try.

I went to the Great Offley Motorcycle Show on Saturday, and the Hitchin ‘Rhythms of the World’ music festival on Sunday.

Video of some of the bands is up at www.kingswalden.com

Rain held off mostly, but it was pretty hot - especially Sunday.
