I haven’t read it or met him, i’ve seen the book – looked like it was well done – but i have quite a bit of similar material so i never got it.
I recently finished reading the first five (of 21) Aubrey/Maturin novels by Patrick O’Brian. I took a break from the series to catch up on the last few issues of National Geographic magazine. I also have a new novel by Charles de Lint waiting to be read: Widdershins.

I finally read Freakonomics and am now reading a new book on the Anza Expedition by Vladimir Guerrero.
Freakonomics was interesting but vaguely dissatisfying. I guess sequels are in order.
I had the same reaction. It was a bit gimmicky and cute rather than satisfying and insightful.
Let me check what I have.
I thought it was “100 Days of Sodomy” by De Sade
That reminds me, I read “Justine and Juliette” by De Sade when I was 14. My parent’s didn’t seem to mind. They never stopped me from reading anything I wanted.
I recently finished a huge pile of marking so I’ve taken a bit of a holiday from reading except for magazines and reference books. I’ve dipped a bit into Woody Allen The Complete Prose but most of that was rereading.
I’m about to reread Flan O’Brien’s The Third Policeman.
I’m eyeing off Peter Guralnick’s Careless Love, the second volume of his vast biography of Elivis Presley. The first volume, The Last Train to Memphis, was superb.

Anyway, really into Taoist folk tales and French books these days. I recommend “Chronicles of Tao” (modern) and “Seven Taoist Masters” (old), and HIGHLY recommend reading smut and philosophy in a foreign language. They both make a lot more sense that way 
Oh yeah, the Third Policeman - I’m reading that too. I know it’s around here somewhere…
Just finished:
Kurland, Much Ado in the Moonlight. A delightful tale involving time-travel, matchmaking ancestral spirits, and men in kilts. Yum!
Trigiani, Big Stone Gap. Lady pharmacist makes good in Appalachia. Nicely crafted characters, surprise ending. Very enjoyable.
In progress:
Pearl-McPhee, Yarn Harlot: The Secret Life of a Knitter. I feel so much better reading about someone else’s issues . . .
P.G. Wodehouse, Cocktail Time. It’s Wodehouse–doesn’t get any better.
Just started:
Pozgar, Legal Aspects of Health Care Administration. So tedious I have to read it standing up to stay awake.
Desperately want:
Evanovich, Twelve Sharp. The next Stephanie Plum, Bond Enforcement Agent, novel. Fun.
Kenyon, Dark Side of the Moon. Trashy hunk novel.
Peter Carey, Theft. He really knows how to do voices.
Great book that. As a follow up I’m now reading James Clavell’s Tai-Pan. Not quite as interesting so far but I do love historical fiction.
Just finished Shusaku Endo’s Deep River. Silence is his best work, but this is good, too. I’m going to read his Wonderful Fool next.
Isak Dinesen’s Carnival. She wrote the short story “Babette’s Feast” which was made into an exquisite movie.
Soren Kierkegaard’s Journals and Papers. See my avatar. I’m writing my dissertation on Kierkegaard and the avatar is supposed to remind me what I should be spending my time doing. It works sometimes.
Man, if I was livin’ in Hawaii I would definitely have problems finishing anything like a dissertation, much less one about Kierkegaard.. Hats off to ya.
I’ve actually escaped Hawaii to the Mainland for the summer to get this done.
