Well… I’m asking as the “Rocky Mountain Boys” are playing in the Kiowa Irish festival in May and we developed a list of tunes to play…(it’s good to know the same tunes! ) Anyway… there are a few that I’m not familiar with and you probably are so here goes:
Rakes of Mallow
Foggy Dew
Dennis Murphy’s Slide
Andersons Reel
John Ryan’s Polka
O’Sullivans March
Tobin’s Favorite
Rolling in the Ryegrass
The Traveler
Monaghan Jig
Brian O’lynn’s
The South Wind
Women of Ireland
As I’m not a big fan of JUST using sheet music… (knowing that I could just search the web) I would like to know what recordings I could find these tunes on… Doesn’t need to be whistle based recordings…
Thanks in advance for all your help… Reasons like this are part of what makes this board so wonderful!
While there have been loads of recordings of this, it came to fame as the tune played in Titanic, when DeCaprio and Winslet danced in the third class party thing. It was also released as a single after that (Not sure by who, but it was obviously the guys who played it for the film).
Denis Murphy’s Slide, The Foggy Dew, and Monaghans…well
I actually have recordings that I did with Ceol na Mara. I’ll see if I can stick some of them on my website (www.ceolnamara.250x.com). Sites not finished yet but I’ll see what I can do.
As for the rest…afraid I can’t help

The South Wind on Joanie Madden’s Song of the Irish Whistle 2 CD is my favorite recording of that tune.
Joanie’s version of Women of Ireland is also very nice, but I like Cormac Breatnach’s version better.
Hi Blayne,
There is a great version of Foggy Dew on the Chieftains Long Black Veil Cd, Sinead O’Connor sings it (might inspire Deb to give it a go) I have whistle and guitar tracks for most of the others. Want me to zip them up and send them along to you? Also check out clips and snips alot of them are there also.
Rakes of Mallow-polka
There are a bunch of versions at Ceolnet. They are mostly all real nifty
I was sure At the Rackett did a track, but I can’t find it. So I’m wrong.
Foggy Dew-Song
by The Battering Ram (self-titled) also re-released as Irish Rebel Songs
John Ryan’s Polka
Planxty- Cold Blow and the Rainy Night
O’Sullivans March-jig or clan-march
NO FINER RECORDING OF THIS TUNE HAS EVER BEEN MADE THAN THAT OF CATHERINE McEVOY (Traditional Flute Music in the Sligo-Roscommon Style). I was shocked at the tune when I heard her play it. Most versions come out sounding like the one The Chieftains do, which is very nice. It sounds very martial in my ears. Catherine plays it in such a way that it becomes a lovely relaxed, rolling and frolicing jig. Absolutely wonderful.
Rolling in the Ryegrass
Elizabeth Crotty-Concertina Music from West Clare
-and-
Grey Larson-on Chris Smith’s Celtic Back Demo (no joke)
The Traveler
The Russell Family-of County Clare
Monaghan Jig
Mary Bergin - Feadoga Stain
The South Wind
Joanie Madden-Songs of the Irish Whistle
