Greetings to everything, I here for the first time!
I play on whistle almost year, and I want buy a low whistle.
After studying a forum I have stopped on Alba. And now I before a choice - in what key to buy whistle?
My hands will suffice and on low C (after 10 years of game on a guitar ).
But during too time I met opinion that key F, for example, frequently sounds more conveniently and more pleasantly.
The matter is that I live in Belarus, and to listen though any whistle alive I cannot …
Therefore I can judge only on records, download it from the Internet..
Can, I and am mistaken, but it seems to me, that at Low D the lowest notes too deaf(indistinct) and weak, as though pressed down. It so actually, and whether is inherent it in higher keys?
I shall add also, that loudness has no for me great value, I play houses. Perhaps, I also would not like too loud whistle.
Probably, somebody had an opportunity to play on different models from Alba, and can give advice(council).
I do not exclude that I shall change the choice about Alba aside another whistle approximately same cost.

i you want an inexpensive low whistle i would go with a low D susato . either way low D is more common and davy spillannes “sea of dreams” is a great place to start- i use a overton
Welcome, Slayer. A good low D will have a very solid low end. I cannot speak for Alba, but Overton and Burke produce a round, excellent sound on the low notes. IMHO, low D Susatos can be a bit of a challenge…

Whistles quite good, but it not that is necessary for me… For me it is necessary metal whistle. Those samples, that I could hear to me like. But if, for example, Overton really it is better, I can find money and for this purpose. I am interested also with a question on a tonality. Whether are equally good Alba and Overton in different keys?

first of all welcome on the board and you are really not the only member who doesn’t have english as mother language…
if you do not want a loud whistle then I would not go for the susato, those are some of the loudest around.
if you don’t know yet which one to choose, then have a listen again to compare the two you mentioned (say, have a look into clips and snips and listen, you can find that by scrolling down when on the forum you see a popup menu at the right side ) and go with whatever gives you the best feeling.
this may sound like a strange advice but follow your guts (intuition so you want) feeling is not a bad thing to do …then you will love your choice for years to come.

Also I repeat once again – I not necessarily search inexpensive whistle, if the sound costs(stands) – I can pay more.

Anyway, so i therefore wanted an F to have a go at that with. I can’t afford an Overton at the moment, so i went down to Hobgoblin in London and tried the whistles in there.
They had Kerry’s, Dixon’s and Alba’s in low D. The Kerry (may have been Cheiftain) was very nice. The Alba i thought was wonderful. After playing those two for about fifteen minutes i tried the Dixon and it sounded ghastly in comparison.
They did have a Kerry F tunable for ÂŁ149 which, as with the Overton, is well beyond what i could afford at the moment. Though i have to say, it is a very nice whistle.
So i opted for the Alba F which i bought direct from Stacey.
I’ve only been playing for a couple of months on a couple of wooden high C’s that don’t need much air. The Alba i’ve had for 5 days now and i’m just starting to get used to it’s breath requirements. It seems to like to be driven hard (in comparison to my C’s) to get the best out of it, but it is nice when i do. The top A and B are a little harsh, but that’s probably more my playing than the whistle, so i’ll reserve judgement on those until i’m a little more experienced with it.
The C# is flat but the C nat is bang on 0xx000, which i suppose depends on what you want to play on it. Breton Breeze is in G so it’s perfect for what i wanted.
The upper octave can go a little sharp on the lower one if you don’t get the breath right. But once you get the hang of it, it’s ok.
IMHO, the Alba low C is one of the best whistles in the galaxy; the best whistle i’ve played. I’ve pleyed 2 of them, and they were equally good (great quality control). I’ve played whistles that cost 3 times as much and are not half as good as the Alba Low C. It has a wonderful huge sound, and despite the size, is not hard to play. I normally don’t even like low whistles, and i play high D almost exclusively, but this is a Good One.
