What a friendly bunch!

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone. I’ve posted two questions and got really friendly, helpful and sometimes quite funny replies.

Welcome here, Taxman.
Jef

Yes, Taxman. You will definately find some wonderful, funny and fiesty people in this great C&F family. I have learned alot since visiting here.

Welcome to the family!

Kathy

It’s all part of a cunning plan to drag a respectable civil servant down to our own level of depravity.

Within months you’ll be dreaming up schemes for rollover relief for Clarks and other tinplate whistles, deep discounting of the capital value of Overton low As and God knows what else.

Shoulda been here a week ago!

Ain’t it the truth? But I’m glad he missed the fireworks. It wasn’t fun for anyone. But Taxman, it CAN be a really great place and we’re glad you’re here.

Friendly, yeah, sure thing TaxmanUK…

Wait until you post about Bush (for or against, whoo kerz ?) , or worse (getting onto real slippery grounds)–recorders…

Or have to give public explanations to your nick, hmm ?

Touth workers are always welcome here, that’s what I always say. By the way, what IS a touth worker?

Maybe that’s supposed to be Youth worker?

A dentist, maybe?

Is a Touth worker not a Dutch word for a person who works for the Govenment? a Civil Servant?

Mr O’Keeffe, where in Belgium do u live? I lived there for a while too, now living in Germany (North West) Nr Hannover!

I am also new here and think that the people here are great!

…Trying frantically to remember the catch phrase (was it Beatles or Monty Python?) “Even the royal house of Hanover had the…”(was it “wheel”?). …Am I suffering from Alzheimer’s? Or Zoobheimer’s ??

Anyway, I’m living in Brussels, Freund Dreher. Had a very good friend from Hanover years ago, but alas she is long dead. She had married an Irishman who was in the British army of occupation in the 1940s. She had a great sense of humour and we used to exchange multilingual puns to beat the band. Are you aware that the German uilleann pipers have an annual gathering somewhere between Hanover and Hamburg, and that they sometimes cater for other instruments? I’ve just lost most of my internet bookmarks, but if you’re interested I could try to track down their website.

Can I talk to you about poetry?
{END obscure billy bragg reference, which is itself an obscure reference to some Check Poet…}

Ahh… poetry…

There once was a tax man from Britain
Who taxed every coat, tie, and mitten,
Tripped over a thistle
And started to whistle,
And with WhOA the poor publican was smitten.

 ha ha ha!!! Good one Walden!!!

Hi Rodger,

Iam not sure about the Monty python thing! Sorry!

I ended up in Germany in the same way as your friend, I was also in the British Army..not an occupation forcr today, now called the Britsh Army of the Rhiene, basically they are still here because there arent enough camps to house them in the UK!

I wasnt aware of the music festival here, I am pretty new to whistling. But if you know where it is held I would definatly go along to take a peek.

I lived with a pal for a while in Brussels, his name was Laurent Parisi, a great guy whom I met in England when he was studying there.

Keep in touch Rodger, I know a of a great Irish pub in a town nr where i live in Germany, maybe come down for a pint of kilkenny one time.

Best wishes

Dale Turner

 Zoobheimer ?

Watch out, Rodger, for ye ferocity of our French taunting shalt take thou completely by surprise…

Dale,

The more I think of it, the more I’m sure that the line was “Even the Royal house of Hanover had the Wheel”, and that it was spoken by Ringo Starr in “Help!”.

Here’s the page of the German Uilleann Pipes Society that describes their activities:
http://dupg.org/dupg.html

Elsewhere on the site you will get an address for Ingeborg Schrewentigges who is the coordinator, and you could contact her and ask her if she knows of any like-minded musicians in your area. She’s involved in the folk music business, so she should have plenty of contacts. You can mention my name, though I haven’t seen her for a few years.

Haven’t come across your friend Laurent, but there are quite a lot of people in Belgium interested in folk music of both the Irish and other persuasions.

Zoubard,

je t’attends au tournant

thanks for the addy Rodger.

Still not ringing any bells with the house of Hannover thing. ALthough the house of Hannover is where the Queen of Englands family came from! Which makes you question what a German queen, with a Cypriot husband/prince is doing as head of state in England??

Maybe a republic is just around the corner for England…(we all have our dreams:-))

Any plans to visit Bonnie Germany in the Future Rodger…

Don’t know why Gerry Adams calls her Mrs Windsor, since her married name is Mrs Battenberg!

No plans to visit Germany for the moment, but I’ll let you know if I’m heading in your general direction.
