I have always been impressed by Patsy Touhey. Many of the current tight pipers seem to imitate his style, but usually with more rolls than Touhey used.
Paddy is a very good piper, but I wouldn’t call his style overly ‘tight’ in comparison to others. A good mix of tight ornamentation however.

Mick Coyne is the tightest piper today, with all the tight and complex triplets too. He learned from Andy Conroy.
Paddy Moloney is marvelously ‘tight’ but with a standard set of triplets. I’ve seen him up close (without the group) and it is just fantastic fingering.
Donnacha Dwyer from Dublin.
Also listen to some RL O’Meally too. Thats fairly staccato too!!

I would have voted Robbie Hannan here, but he seems to be loosening up with age. ![]()

Well, thanks to Chris Bayley I now have all the BBC’s old O’Mealy recordings up on

as well as a couple of Patsy Touhey’s. If anyone’s got any more of Touhey’s they can contribute, that would be of value for the whole community

Robbie Hannan you’d have to look for…
tompipes,
are you sure Donnacha Dwyer has a very staccato way of playing? porb I didn’t listen to him so much…
That is a great collection of tunes.
The Seamus Ennis tracks should be essential listening for anyone interested the the pipes.

I think that you could add Sean Potts and Joseph McLaughlin to the list. Paddy Keenan can be very tight as well on occasion

Maybe it is just me, but, doesn’t anybody else find this thread about tight pipers just a mite… well… ummm… ironically redundant? ![]()
How so Joseph?
?_?
Confused in Rhode Island! Help!

Pipers are notoriously tight.
Have you ever known one unstrap themselves to pay for a round at the bar?
We leave that to the whistle players.

The best tight piping I’ve heard is Finbar Furey’s CD ‘Traditional Irish Pipe Music’ re-released on Wooded Hill Recordings. It’s from 1968, and is pure tight piping, compared to his later recordings (like lonesome boatman) which balanced open and closed styles more.
As far as I know Finbar is still playing, although don’t know what his current favoured style is. Apparently one of his party tricks is to imitate other well known pipers styles and posture etc.
