There seems to have been a flood of new members recently. I was just wondering–was there some worldwide catastrophic event to cause so many new people to suddenly take up the whistle? Sort of like SAWS…(Sudden Acute Whistling Syndrome). Hopefully, a cure will not be found. At any rate, it’s great to see!

Hey there, I’m a newbie
as for why, my theory is that the crappy economy is a factor… i wanted to learn how to play the guitar (as all other members of my immediate family, excepting my wife know how to play), but i simply can’t afford the cost of a guitar, lessons, and maintenance right now. for the pennywhistle, price, umm, isn’t an issue 
I just picked up the whistle 2 weeks ago… I saw the Walton’s Guiness whistle in a shop here, and thought it looked cool, so I got it. this is the 3rd time in my life I’ve tried to learn it, but I actually mean it this time. i played recorder in grade school for a bit, and clarinet in music class through junior high/high, so the muscles seem to remember how to work like this.
I have another pennywhistle in the house SOMEWHERE, but it’s buried in my storage room. not sure what kind it is – chrome body with a green plastic head on it.
As for me (another newbie), summer vacation was my reason to get started. My boyfriend bought me a whistle because I’ve been wanting to learn for a while. Once I went on summer vacation, I actually had time to do some research on the internet about the instrument I was trying to learn. I am determined not to sound like a classical musician playing the pennywhistle.
I’m stationed in Korea with the US Army and have to be away from my family for a year, so I figured that I would do something to improve myself and surprise everyone when I come home.
Well, I’m not exactly a newbie… been here on and off throughout the years! Some of you may know me as The Whistling Elf, or Isilwen, but this is “The new me.” Well, sort of… lol

There are a lot of new people taking up the whistle. That’s a good thing. But have you noticed how many songs, movies, TV shows, etc. have whistles playing in the background. Often these are unseen and inconspicuous. Who is behind this? Is there a great conspiracy? We need to know.
