It has come to my attention that certain no-cost blog platforms, such as Blogger, have the disadvantage of Google having full rights to your posted content.
I don’t mind so much where my personal blog is concerned, because it’s rather piddling in nature, but that feels like a big fat “uh-oh” when it comes to a site where I’d post copyrighted (by me) material.
I really don’t want Google (or anyone) to have the right to do whatever they want with it.
OTOH, I am not in a money-making venture, and am looking for ways not to spend much money.
I’m setting up an author web-page where I will post links to downloadable work, and maybe link to serialized chapters. Also, I want to be able to make it look pretty.
Anyone have experience with inexpensive web-hosting with which you’re happy? Happy enough, anyway.
This is going to be pretty useless as a recommendation, because I can’t remember the name and it’s a UK company, but there must be plenty of US equivilents. So hopefully this will give you an idea what you’re looking for.
Anyway, my brother is a photographer (formerly professionally, now more as a sideline) and he was in need of a new website and wanted me to develop one for him. I was too busy but told him all he needed was some basic content management system and a gallery plugin that he can link to paypal or something for ordering prints. Eventually he found a place that gave him unlimited storage (important as some of the photos are very large), a whole heap of pre-installed authoring apps and a domain name for £5 a month. He just fired up wordpress on it and off he went.
I use GoDaddy.com for my business http://www.AuroraOhioKennel.com. It’s pretty reasonable and people seem to like the site. I get a lot of good comments. I set it up in a weekend.

That is, if Blogger (i.e. Google,) is used as the hosting site, but the authored content is merely linked to, as opposed to being on the actual Blogspot pages, would the linked items be free of Google claims to rights?
If all you’re just posting a link on the google hosted site then all google could feasibly lay claim to is the text of the link, which is only useful if you wrap a link tag round a piece of original text rather than a URL.
Otherwise you could link to the BBC and google could claim copyright over all their content, which isn’t realistic.
I still don’t understand how they get away with claiming copyright on anything posted to their blogs anyway. The copyright should remain with the author of the work. It would be interesting to see them defend it in court.
I seem to remember myspace and other sites having to rewrite their terms and conditions after musicians objected to similar wording that claimed they could use any music uploaded to their site for whatever they wanted.
That’s mostly but not entirely correct. No agreement that Em might make with a host site can affect the Beeb’s copyright, because Em doesn’t own that right. She does own the copyright on her own work, so it’s conceivable that a contract she makes with a host could affect this.
I meant I couldn’t remember the name of the hosting company he ended up using which provided wordpress and other tools as part of the package, I can remember the name of my brother fine.
Just been glancing at the Blogger terms of service:
Google claims no ownership or control over any Content submitted, posted or displayed by you on or through Google services
The only thing that they do say is that by posting the content on blogger you grant google a non-exclusive right to reproduce the content on google services for the purpose of displaying google services. Which seems like legal speak for letting them publish the content online for you.
Maybe that’s it then. You certainly wouldn’t think that posting stuff would preempt a pre-existing copyright anyway.
anyway, so…right. I’m now attempting to figure out how to design a website using Wordpress. Pppphhhhbbbbt.
I can just feel so dumb sometimes. Reminds me of about 21 years ago, just before we bought our first Mac SE, and I was playing with a friend’s Mac. She said the word “font.” I remember thinking font? FONT? What the heck is a FONT? Well, I can say with some assurance that I did figure out what a font was, as I have figured out the other initially befuddling things about computers over the year. At least insofar as I had to.
About the same price as Laughing Squid, which I’m trying out now. With WordPress.
FTP, SQL, textonly, categories…bleh, bleh, bleh…I will figure this out. And then, someday, get back to the actual content-writing.
Peeps from the the vast NANOWRIMO (national write a novel in a month group) empire would have answers to most questions that you might have. A good many seem to use Wordpress to host their novels in progress. The group may be in hibernation until November comes near though. Searching on certain keywords is almost sure to bring widgets or sites, or other information that may be useful to your quest.
In my old age, I find it is usually better to ask (or search) than to reinvent. Sometimes it is reinvent and then innovate, sometimes it is just reuse what someone else took months to figure out.
I don’t know how to do this. It is vastly more befuddling than Japanese.

I’ve got a domain name. I have a web host. I downloaded WordPress. I cannot, in any way put them together.
You’re over halfway there.
You need an FTP program - Filezilla works (PC or Mac I believe) or on the Mac (are you a Mac user) there is also Cyberduck probably others if you look.
Then you just need a user name and password for ftp - this is probably not the same as the login password for your domain.
Upload wordpress - a simple drag and drop
You will need to set up a database - this should be part of your hosts online control panels - this involves creating a database with a username and a password - all the tricky stuff will be done by wordpress
Then you just needgo to site and log into wordpress and it will do the rest
