64 years since the end of war in Europe today, the one we call “the War”.
That’s right … Happy V-E Day!
The Great Patriotic War, I believe it was known as.
While history should never be forgotten, let us remember that TGPW and WWII are now long over, and that we all have a future to face, together.

“What if they gave a war and nobody showed up.”
While I wouldn’t argue with the war being long over there are those of us who are still looking for family who disappeared. Some of us are still seeking justice. The ICRC just put a local woman in touch with a nephew in Moscow she had no idea even existed. She had been transported from the Ukraine to a camp and for all these years thought she had lost her whole family. Bittersweet. For many of us the War of Soviet/Nazi Aggression is still a fresh memory.
Apparently the Second World War only “officially” ended in 1990!
The reason is that there was no unified German State to sign the documents. Once East and West germany got back together again, the thing was done.
I simply love a happy ending, don’t we all?

-I’m grateful for no war and grateful to WW II vets, many pulling strings to get in and fight. A world war destroying sixty million people still seems close. In America, Asia, Europe, Scandinavia and Africa many of us have grown up in postwar years hearing of loved ones whom perished. Dad returned safely after close calls in the Pacific war. Sweetie’s dad survived the downing of his B-17 and spent the last six months of the European war as a POW, hungry on thin rations until liberation. -Hats off

I’m glad and thankfull - really a day to celebrate! 
I’d just hope, we all had learned more from it… How many more wars are to be fought, before mankind understands, war makes no sense..? 
A number of folks have learned how to be thankful they won the war.
Sergei Shoigu, the respected emergency situations minister, has called for a law, based on Holocaust denial legislation in Germany, that would make it a criminal offence to suggest that the Soviet Union did not win the War.
Mr Shoigu indicated that the legislation would also seek to punish eastern European or former Soviet states which deny they were liberated by the Red Army. The leaders of those countries could be banned from Russian soil, he said.
My wife’s family were so thankful for the freedom the Soviets brought them in Poland I guess they just shot themselves out of pure joy and those who didn’t got to vacation in Siberia. Good times!

Thinking that way, it’s still not ended. There’s still no peace treaty between Russia and Japan, only a cease fire. In 1946 Japan capitulated, but to US, not to USSR, though USSR also took part in that '46 campaign, the land operation in in China - “the defeat of Kvantun army”, and annexed some land - the Sakhalin island and some of Kuril islands (which were annexed by Japan in 1905, AFAIR). USSR never bothered about such stuff, but now the peace treaty (and the islands!) are a big concern of russian-japanese diplomacy 
Thinking different way, there’s no even a small chance to end it for us, as “the war is not ended before the last fallen soldier is buried”. It was won by blood, by fucken lots of blood - and with pure heroism of those who gave it. 23 million - that’s more than every 10th. If fields and woods of Smolensk, or Kursk, or whatever, metal detecters just ring all the time, as there’s metal of that war in the ground - and bones. There are the volunteers who do the search, who find and bury soldiers and even find their names sometimes, but that’s a waterdrop in a sea.
