Wanted: TW summer schools in Ireland/Scotland

Hello everyone,

after a long pause during which I completed my studies and finally started working in my new job, I’m back.

As I’ve unsuccessfully tried to find a teacher or study group near my place, I’m now trying to combine a trip to Ireland or Scotland with a tin whistle summer school or workshop for beginners.

Got any suggestions?

Hey! Don’t send everyone to Joe Mooney! It’s too good. I want it.

:smiling_imp:

Seriously, though, it’s kind of like a calmer version of the Willie Clancy, so, yep, it’s great.

To paraphrase a well know ad - “It’s great. But you won’t like it.”

Sabahl mhor ostaig has courses on Skye (this is Scotland BTW) - don’t know who is running the course but if you like midgies and precipitation then Skye is always a winner!

Thank you for your help so far.

Are there any summer schools you know of that take place at the end of July?

Or are there any autumn/winter/spring schools, too?

I think Scoil Acla is later in July. South Sligo is wedged between Willie and Mooney. The Carolan thing in Keadue is more in your time frame but there’s no end of festivals that run a few classes during the summer, Feakle for example, and there are both schools ( Scoil Cheoil an Earraigh ) and festivals ( Corofin ) in spring and winter (Frankie Kennedy ) as well.

The Masters of Tradition in Bantry House is the gem among festivals, more a series of top of the range concerts (as the name indicates) in a lovely setting (we played a night there two years or so ago) but they generally run classes during one or two days as well. Martin Hayes used to be program director for the festival but it seems that have changed so maybe the nature of the festival will change a bit as well.

Carmel Gunning (based in Sligo) is available for private lessons in July. http://www.carmelgunning.com/
No Summer School this year, it seems.

Thank you for your help so far.

I’ve already thought about private lessons myself, because my choice in time off dates is very limited this year. However, I’m afraid that they’d be probably too expensive for me. What with the flight, accommodation, food, etc., I’m not sure private lessons’d be in my price range.

Are there any schools or festivals in your region you can especially recommend? I mean other than the one’s you’ve already mentioned, of course.

Slightly off-topic, but I’ve signed-up for the Folkworks Summer School in
Durham (N.E. England) 10-15th August 2009:

The whistle/flute tutor is Martin Dunn.
