Wanted to Buy: A good slim flute

Yep, probably our Mr. James Hamilton, who will be contributing a track to Wooden Flute Obsession vol.4, as will Peter Maguire, also in MA.

Hello, Loren,

Crookedtune just put a Sweetheart Resonance keyless D flute up for sale (see his recent thread), which has the sort of “slim” body you are looking for.

Thanks cork. Crooked did offer me the flute, but I’m looking for something on par with Olwell, Wilkes, etc.

Thanks though, I do appreciate the heads up.

Still interested in a Glenn Watson flute, if anyone out there has one that’s not seeing enough playing time.

My first “real” keyed wooden flute was a Lehart - fantastic value and workmanship.

But I wouldn’t have said that it was a slim flute. It had a big bore and big fingerholes.

Something like Peter Noy’s R&R would be much slimmer, and much lighter.

Did Lehart make both R&R and Prattens style flutes? I don’t know, but it might explain why one Michael’s impression is different.

Anyone know? (Not that I’ve had an offer of a used Lehart, but it would be nice to know.)

loren, lehart make only ruddal and rose model ,with lined head, but with bigger tone holes.i have his 5 keyed flute and i am very satisfied with his flute ,craftmanship, quality of sound, volume, etc.
he recently had his web site on www. lehart.free.fr. so you could find more information about his flutes and his other instruments. current price for his D flute is 600 euros for keyless, with waiting time around 2-3 months. also, i found his copper rings very atractive and different from other makers.
his flutes are really slim and elegant( and slimer than jon c. ruddal model- i had till 2 days ago jon ruddal flute -traveling cocobolo flute in europe, so i could compare both flutes).
also, i made one experiment, and put jon unlined head in lehart and that improved sound of lehart even more and give more woody, natural sound.
when i first time saw your topic i would like to suggest you lehart, but as i know he make flutes only in blackwood and so far he didn’t make flute with unlined ( or french style )head.
i know that because i would like to order from him eb flute with unlined head, so he answer me that so far he didn’t do unlined head, but he will be able to do it for me if i really want.
i am also big fan of murray flute but unfortunatelly it is out of my price range, expecialy because i want to add few keys ( f short, g sharp).
my flute had been played with several belfast musician ( and good part of they play murrays…) and all of they like lehart flute and his sound.
also, all of they could achieve great volume from his flute ( although not same volume as for example thomas provse flute, but you could consider lehart flutes as flute with good volume)
as someone said 90 % is player and 10% flute, so when paul o’shaughnnesy play lehart his overall sound and volume is more or less same as when he played his nicholson olwell.
just to add, leahart keys is 90 euros each, postmounted and they are very good in action and good looking, except his c key , wich is really unatractive for eye ( my opinion..), so it only key wich i havent on my flute.
that is all from me, marin

Thank you for the information Marin, much appreciated

My keyless Windward (Forbes Christie, Nova Scotia) flute (unlined head) is quite slim. And I like it a lot (subjective opinion obviously…). Should you end up wanting to order a flute instead of finding one used then it is probably worth having a look at his flutes.

Strangely, it feels heavier than my McGee (6 Key GLP!) - probably due to the lightweight elliptical Bore unlined head and short foot on the McGee. But the McGee is slightly thicker.

Chris.
