Does anone have a John Swayne Low D they would be interested in selling?
Cor, you’d be very very lucky! I can’t imagine anyone who has one parting with it unless they were dead! Still, you never know!
I plan to get one myself one day to go with my high D, but I’ll go direct to the man and take the wait!
In my years of whistle trafficking, I believe I’ve seen exactly one ever offered for sale. ![]()
I too wish you best of luck. If you get more than one offer, send them my way. I’ve been dying to see what all the fuss is about. ![]()
Doc
You can always buy direct from the source. ![]()
If I ever see or hear one I might. Alas, they remain mythic creatures to me…shadowy imaginings frolicking beyond my reach on the frayed edge of my conscious awareness.

Have you seen/heard high ones, Doc? If not, there’s a clip of me playing mine on my YouTube channel. I have had a couple of goes on a low one - Stephen Rees of Welsh band Crasdant has one in blackwood, and it is every bit as good as the high ones.
Last time I e-mailed Jon sometime late last year, he said he had about a 6 month wait on his whistles - shorter for High Ds. Tony Hinnigan has reviewed the Low Ds on his website as well: http://www.tonyhinnigan.com/moviedl.php?group=29
Thanks for posting the clip, Jem. I always enjoy getting a glimpse of the players who post, particularly when they’re the real deal. That’s very impressive, and most inspiring. Good things to you.
Thanks for the kind words! When I looked back at that clip for the first time in a while last night, I could see all kinds of stuff amiss in it - mostly timing… but it does show the tone qualities of the Swayne to good advantage (allowing for the relatively poor recording quality of a mobile phone), especially its superb bottom end and responsiveness. As you’re probably aware, I’ve recently tried 3 “high end” wooden whistles, of which the best player was the new WS (not reviewed, unlike the two Aussie tourers - with vid clips), but the Swayne is still head and shoulders above all of those - maybe spoiling me as a reviewer, though on the other hand, it gives me a very good idea of what it is possible to achieve in whistle building!
Have you seen the demos I did recently for Doug Tipple? http://www.youtube.com/dougsflutes

Doc
Ah, I was looking for his website but couldnt find it (does he have one?)
Anyhow i found his email address on this website and sent him an email.
Many thanks
Colin.
Oddly enough (or perhaps not accidentally), the ones without websites have the longest leadtimes. ![]()
