Preferably a complete set not missing any vital parts. I could perhaps bear to buy some reeds. David Daye and others welcomed. Our school is in need of a piper for events and I play concertina, zouk, whistle so I volunteered. I have done some research and Daye’s queue right now is 9mo. Is it even possible to find a decent one used under 2k? Go raibh maith agaibh.
“Is it even possible to find a decent one used under 2k?”
For a half or 3/4 set, no.
For a bag, bellows, and chanter, yes - order one new though, since you’re learning.
You’ll get something like these Pipes in auction
You might occasionally see a half set of Daye pipes for around $2K, but if you do, you’ll need to be fast. I don’t think you’ll find anything else which is playable at that price point.
You’re better off either:
- continue saving your money until you have a budget of at least $4k for a half-set or $6k for a 3/4 set, or
- get yourself a practice set (chanter, bag and bellows) - $2k is a reasonable budget for a no-frills practice set, and you can save for drones and regulators while you learn the basics on the chanter.
I have seen a few Eugene Lambe and Robbie Hughes sets going very reasonably. They got a lot of my generation of pipers going and will get you started if you want to do it on the cheap. There’s stuff that was made from the late seventies and eighties onward being let go with original owners decluttering or dying.
I’d caution the OP though to not approach this with a ‘how hard can it be?’ mindset.
I’ve heard positive things about Martin crossin although I’m not sure if his prices are within that range.
You might see some sets going on Bagpipe Central for prices that suit your budget.

Yes, Martin makes very fine pipes and I’d say a new practice set from him would be around that budget.
Does anyone know roughly how much a Martin crossin full set goes for?
I have no idea but you’ll get in touch with him here. https://martincrossin.com/
