I don’t know how “budget-conscious” your student is, but if you don’t find a used one, then for about the same cost as the sweetheart, your student could get a Burns Folk Flute for $375, a Forbes delrin flute for $395 , or a Copley Delrin flute for $360 without rings. All great flutes. I haven’t played the boxwood folk flute, but I used to own one in mopane, and kind of wish I’d have kept it. I have played a Forbes, and they’re good flutes. The Copley I know nothing about personally, but folks on here have them and like them. Also, for a bit more, bruceb has a McGee GLP for sale at $600. I have the same model flute, gave 200 more for it new, and wouldn’t part with it for anything.
None of these have a dedicated tuning slide, but all are tunable by adjusting how far the tenon goes into the head socket.
