W. Camp Flute

I’ve just recived a William Camp Flute
marked “W Camp - 81 Tottenham CTRD - London”
CtRd is for “Court Road”

the flute was very dirty and lies unplayed since too many years
there are some repairs to do and the Crown is lost…
but I’m working to let it come back to life…

after a first playing test: it is a bit flat on low D and sharp on A’
(as usuall), most important the tone in very nice, nice keywork,
wonderful wood (bright cocus)…well, is an unespected lovely player!!

how many Camp flute do you have / have seen ?
->David, may you post a photo of your’s flute?
which R&R shows the W.Camp’s hand?

this is a photo before the restoring process

new photos are coming…

Hmmm.

I guess you have seen David’s web page…

http://www.rcich.com/migoya/id108.htm

yes, I have.
it’s a wonderful info website, unfotunatly there are no more photos…

Looks like it will be a awesome flute when you are finished with it. It looks like the C# key touch is broken? Never seen the key break there before. It looks a lot like my RRC.
We are all waiting for follow up photos of it!

hei Jon,

here is a photo of its actual condition during the repadding process:

Lovely! and plays wonderfully!
moreover
here’s a comparison between the Camp’s Slide and a Craig Fischer’s (posted from uilleannobsession.com)

and

the -hidden- tuning slide is incredible! the -goldish color is …wired! ('couse everything else is silver!)

Not so weird I think. Just a guess but it could be that its missing its silver sleeve.

BTW.

That C. Fisher is a modern flute.

I have had the pleasure of personally playing that particular flute a few times.

Real cracker of a flute too.

Your Camp should be winner.

Looks perfectly ready for a session just as it is.

Just put a rubber band on that G# and perhaps a hose clamp somewhere for flair and you can kick it old school.

I wonder if the D ring is not a replacement, as it doesn’t match the other Boosey style rings. Hard to say about the slide, I have some that were just brass, like this. If it had a silver sleeve over it, it would probably be scored and there would be signs of soft solder, as they sleeve was usually soldered on with lead solder, unless someone cleaned it up. It has a Hawkes/Boosey look to it.
Can you measure the bore at both ends, it would be interesting which bore contour it has. If it is a Hawkes style bore, the bore will start at 18.3 and end in 13.1. Rudall bore will be 18.3 tapering faster 10 mm in will be 17.8, then the other end of the section will be 12.8.
Looks like a fun project!

I’ve tried to get some measures
we are talking of a 3 pieces flute
the head bore is 1,68 cm -->16,8 mm
the body starts a 15,9mm, it’s 15mm just going inside about 10mm
and to the very end measures 10mm.
while the foot ends with 9 mm.
wish not to have miss somethings or missunderstood your requests… let me know!

ps.
*the bottom foot ring is original 100%, it was just blaked dirty, and now looks awsome.
*the flute seems not be be played so much so I think the goldish slide is original too.
*the wood seems bright red cocus..very wild and beauty!

Hi,
I was reffering to the Barrel ring, maybe being different.
That is kind of strange, are you sure your calipers are zeroed?
The head bore should 18.6-18.9mm
The upper section, should be in the area of between 17.6-18.3mm but most are in the 18mm range.
The bottom of the upper section about 13- 15mm
It looks like either your flute is keyed to F or your calipers are off by 3mm? It happens all the time…
Another good measurement would be from the C# to the D#(Eb) key hole.
That is the best Cocus, the redish stuff.
Should be a nice flute when you are done.
Are you going to fix the keys yourself, or have them repaired?

:open_mouth: I’ve change my metre of measure… it was broken or false!
(unbeliveble!)

from the C# to the D#(Eb) key hole there are 25,3 cm
the head bore is 18,7
the body starts a 18 mm and ends at 12,5mm.
while the foot ends with 10,8 mm

I’m just reppadding it, for best repairs I’ll send it to hammy…when I collect enough money :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Jon makes some nice hand forged keys and his castings are really nice too.

Just thought I’d mention that.

That sounds about right for a Rudall bore. It should play pretty much in tune, maybe the A a little sharp and the F# a little flat, but just the way I like it. Hammy would do a good job, and he is closer…

more news…
the flute is now almost ready for a session
it plays lovely (altough the lined head is cracked) and powerful.
I’ve worked with an art restorer to fix the crack at the C#/C foot block,
and now it works perfectly, just the small rosewood piece (between the C#/C keys)
needs a small color finish…
what is the best to use for this?
vernish? oli?
I’d like to recive some advises
Thanks!

ps Jon, the ring at the end of headjoint is a replacement as you claimed,
I’m going to have a new one in the Camp’s style.
have you/someone any suggests/photos for the Crown ???
