What an interesting thread. Personally, I am not a whistle maker (I’m trying to make a copper low D, but right now it sounds like I am just blowing air through a tube), but I have really enjoyed reading the tech talk threads.

Serpent, you seemed to have stirred up something. Seems people are kind of upset at your postings/new forum request. Personally, I like the threads and would like to see them continue. If people don’t like them, they can choose to not read them.

I also read where someone was upset about other threads getting bumped down the page. On my browser (I assumed this was true of all) messages that are new since my last access are marked with pink folders, as opposed to yellow folders. So its pretty easy to see which messages are new, even if I have to hit the PageDown key.

I also find the voting interesting. The question was do you want a new forum crreated. I like the messages here, so I would vote “No”, while others don’t like the messages, and vote “No”. It seems like if you didn’t like the messages you would vote “Yes”, so the messages would be moved to another forum that you would never have to check, and would uinclutter the forum that you love.

Now we’re drifting from flame wars to game theory!

I think that your labelling threads “tech talk” and keeping them on this board is the ideal solution which you so elegantly found, Bill, so don’t cheese people off by getting heated about it, even if you were subjected to some unnecessary abuse when you started out here.

Any Reasonable Person will expect both professional and amateur makers to post on such threads, and I don’t think that the pros will be seen as engaging in commercial self-promotion for doing so. If some want to share their knowledge, while others want to keep their trade secrets, that’s OK too: for me the music is all for enjoyment, but if some people want to make a living or supplement their incomes with whistle-making, that’s OK by me. We all still benefit.

So that’s a well-meaning vote No.

The sole intent of this thread is to collect votes, pro or con, in “petition” to Dale to either create, or not create, a new forum for Celtic Wind Instrument Engineering. This forum would include whistles, flutes, and pipes, and would be dedicated primarily to technical discussion about any and all.

If you think something like this would be a Good Thing, please vote “yes”.

If you think it’s a lame idea from somebody who’s just trying to leech off the board, or any other reason you don’t like it, please vote “no”.

I would very much appreciate it if participants would avoid lobbying in either direction. “yes” or “no” will do fine.

It was, indeed, added later, with much other text explaining the name change. I put it all up front because I figured that since the name changed, people would look there. Apparently I was right, with some.

However, I see that it is equally applicable here, at the end, so thanks for bringing it back to me! :slight_smile:

To the others who have started reading the WTT#n threads, thanks for participating. I hope we’ll all find them useful.
