Everything I record on my computer comes out very soft. How can I increase the volume? Should I get a better mic? Is there something I can do to boost the power / sensitivity of the mic?

Lots of things you can try. Check the master volume controls on your PC. Make sure the mic input is up all the way in Windows. The type of mic you use can have a direct effect, e.g. if you are using a mic that requires a mic preamp (phantom power) you will definitely want to add the preamp or change mic types. Mic placement can also affect volume. It can be tricky, and you will want to experiment to get close enough for lots of volume, but not so close that it starts to mess up your sound.
