Virtual Session? Virtual Lessons?

For anyone who is interested, I highly recomment Harry Bradley’s distant lessons. For me it’s especially because I would love to sound like him.

His influence on my playing has been immense (though I don’t know whether he wouldn’t renounce me as someone who is looking for the same sound as him ) and he’s always within email reach if you have a question.

Mahanpots,

There is indeed a conferencing facility in Skype. I’ve not used it yet, but I’m sure it would be fine; particularly if we were doing the “playing in the round” as I suspect the more people you add the greater the bandwidth demand and thus latency.

I’m glad you’d be interested!

Tirno,

I’ll have a look at the lessons you mention, but don’t really have any spare cash to pay for lessons at the moment (all my money will be going for the Carl Bell flute I’m desperate to get).

Can I get a show of hands on who would like to take part in an initial meeting/session and where you’re located (so we can try to think of a time of day that includes all or as many as possible)?

Hey all,

I don’t think the most recent Skype allows for video conferencing with multiple parties, only voice. There is a plugin on Skype’s website that supposedly allows for a video conference of up to 4 people. I’ve never tried it..

Here’s the link:

i would be in for it. i agree that it is only voice, which would still be fun. i live outside of chicago.

I’m interested. Since I’ve only been playing for < 2 months, I’ll mostly be listening though. I’m located in the eastern time zone in cold snowy Canada.

Thanks for supplying this link. I’m having some fun with this. Since I’m a late beginner, past 50, with no prior music experience, this might be as close as I get to playing in a real session, or if I ever do, this is a great way to start.

MichaelR, Daiv, and Mahanpots,

Since we’re all “spanning the globe” as they used to say on the Wide Wide World Of Sports, I guess a Saturday or Sunday would be best.

I think I’m 6 hours ahead of you, so 12pm lunch time is 6pm supper time for me, which is fine. We could each dig up a tune, play part or all, and the more/most experienced player(s) could give us feedback and we could ask the more/most experienced for pointers.

How does that sound?

Guess we just need to pick a Saturday or Sunday. I could probably do this Saturday if that’s ok with you guys. Please let me know.

Harryallen, I like the virtual session link. I’ll have to give it a try. Thanks for making us aware of it. Looks like good fun.

The credit should go to Bothrops. I’ve discovered it is part of BBC Radio. A world perspective on folk music for us yanks. I’m adding this to my links next to www.liveireland.com.

Saturday is good but unfortunately I have my whistle lesson at 12:00. It can be at 10:00 in the morning or anytime after 1:00.

Sunday can be anytime.

Instead of a tune for me I would like to focus on the embouchure. Since it’s been less than 2 months flute playing for me I need to get that in better shape.

Michael

I might be at the beach away from the internet this weekend. But don’t wait on me.

Michael

Shall we make it 10am US/Canadian time?

That’s fine for me.

What do the rest of you think? Probably the most important person here is Daiv as I’ve only been playing a few weeks, so I’m looking for input in the face of possibly making an ass of myself.

10:00am EST is good for me.

I’ll install and setup a skype account and make sure I pass on the contact info.

Yes, Daiv will be the key guy because I’m also a beginner…but I can teach someone how to blow a bad note very consistently so you would just need to do the opposite and then you’ll be all set  .

I’ll be here after all. The trip to the beach is Sunday.

Michael

Michael, It’s really great that you can attend as well. I’ve been listening to your clips and they really sound excellent.

I know it will be a great help to me.

It’ll be interesting to see how it works. I’ve got DSL, but the slowest version of DSL.

Michael

I’m using a cable modem. Peformance has been good for other web sharing applications I’ve used in the past but I’ve not used any VOIP software before so we’ll see.

I’ve just installed Skype and am almost ready…except I forgot I need a microphone so I’ll pick that up tomorrow sometime.

Guys,

That’s great. I’m really looking forward to it.

Shall we send mails or pm’s from now on with our Skype details?

See you guys (well, at least hear you guys) on Saturday.

I would be inerested. Like MichaelR I’m a newbie so will probably listen more than anything.

The more the better!

Not sure what restriction there is on conferencing (if any), but hey, we’ll soon find out.

If anyone has a problem being added to the conference, though, or if we get a message about a maximum number of participants, just stay logged into here and I’ll post a message and maybe we can do two sessions.

Sound good?

Guys,

I’ve done a cursory look around and it does look like Skype limits a conference to 4 participants plus the host. That seems ok with the people we have so far:

karl
mahanpots
MichaelR
daiv

Add in me and that’s 4 + host.

I’ll send you all a pm with my Skype ID. If you each send me a pm with yours I think we’ll be covered.
