For the very first time, I’m trying to organize a virtual session. All you need is a computer with a connection, a microphone and a sound card, plus your instrument - be it whistle, fiddle, bodhran, what have you…
I participated in one last year, and it was really fun. I’ve chosen the music, and have a volunteer to play the lead - it’s a fairly simple tune called “Tour de Taille”, and there appears to be no sheet music, so when you hear it, it’ll probably be a surprise to most. Anyhow, here’s how it’ll work:
I’ll put an MP3 up of a goodly chunk of the original piece, and you can pick out how you want to go about doing your part. What you’ll be hearing will be a pair of fiddles, mostly, so your creativity is going to be a big part of this session!
Once we have our participants (this call closes at the end of October since I want us to be finished by the Holidays), I’ll request parts one at a time, and will email the mix so far, to each of you as your part comes up. You’ll be able to hear the current state of the mix from my website in a private directory.
As each participant’s part is completed, s/he will mix it with the other ones that are done, and email both the mix and your track, back to me. I’ll then send it on to the next part. I’ll keep clean copies of all tracks, just in case something unforeseen happens. If you cannot do the mix yourself, I’ll do it for ya.
I prefer that you send me .WAV files rather than, or in addition to, MP3, as MP3 is “lossy” compression, and each iteration it gets mushier. I was going to ask that you post it to an FTP directory, but that way leads to madness, so email it shall be.
