Vintage Piping Postcards

I managed to recently pick up an old (1906) Uilleann piping postcard. This one wasn’t in the NPU archive. Does anyone know the piper? Looks like a 3/4 set to me, kind of similar to the Willie Rowsome set with the drones.

Anyone else have any cool old piping paraphernalia?

Not sure this card is based on an actual piper. There’s a whole bunch of them, same scene with a castle in the back ground and other variations. The same set of pipes also comes up in another card, by the same artist/publisher. To me it seems the set, or at least the drones, are based on the drones as they occur in (some versions) of the famous image of Paddy Conneely

The NPU archive has most of these hidden in some form or other. This is one of the more common ones anyway. There’s a fair range of different cards about, some photographs, some artist’s impressions and some artist impressions from photographs as well. Some are more rare than others. I usually pick them up when I find them without a crazy pricetag on them.

Here are a few, I have a few more but had these handy from an earlier thread:

That poor blind fellow with the valley in his thigh! Occupational hazard, I think they call it.

Six-out-of-nine feature top-loading chanters…

Hyphenetically yours,

Thanks Peter, those scans are great. The artist John Carey has quite a few of this fella piping, with various poses and backgrounds.

Two have just come up on eBay UK for anyone interested.

Sorry, I had already taken down a few of the images when I thought the thread had run it’s course.

Another thing to look out for are the ‘peat cards’ that were printed on paper with ‘real Irish peat’ mixed in.
