Does anyone know how I can get the recordings to accompany Volume 1 of Vincent Broderick’s ‘Turoe Stone Collection’?
I know Volume 2 comes with a CD now, which is great. Volume 1 once had a cassette tape to go with it, but it currently sells without any audio. I’ve been learning a few of the tunes from the dots, but that’s not my favorite way.

Great renditions of The New Broom and The Mountain Stream. Just learned the first this past week. Must now forge on to the second. There’s a bit of a discussion in the Tunes section of The Session on The Mountain Stream. There was an enquiry here https://forums.chiffandfipple.com/t/vincent-broderick-the-turoe-stone-vol-1/84047/6 The tape, which is now rather like powdered Unicorn Horn, was issued by CCE. It had 32 of the 68 tunes. Lawrence, Vincent’s son, was on it along with Vincent and two fiddlers.
Steampacket thought he had a copy. Member Seanie seems to have had a copy. How about it Tomas, did you find it?
I wonder if Mr. Gumby has something hidden away in his tune locker?
There was another clip from TG4 where Vincent played a couple of reels, but I haven’t found it again.

During the award ceremony, Vincent claims innocence of reading or writing music, but he does seem to have had an amanuensis who wrote down all the tunes in the two volumes. I can’t quite make out his name. I think it was ‘Tony Smith’ but I’m not sure. He was one of the fiddlers who accompanied him doing the two barndances.
Seamus MacMathuna wrote that Vincent made several tours with CCE to the USA, Canada, and the UK. Perhaps there are some disks from these tours.

There’s a picture of them together in Vol. 2. His name is Antoin Mac Gabhann, and he’s credited in the acknowledgments. I’m not sure where the ‘Smith’ came from.

Antoin’s proper name
While he has been using the Irish version of his name more in recent years, Tony Smith is just as much his ‘proper’ name and one used often by many.

Hm, not the tape that belongs to the book but there’s some Broderick stuff somewhere. I’ll have a look.

Mac Gabhann
“Mac” = "son of’
“Gabhan” = “Smith,” or “Blacksmith”
MacGabhan translates as son of (black)smith, hence Tony Smith.
Tony is the father of concertina player, Caitlin Nic Gabhann – Cathleen (or Catherine), daughter of Smith.
Does anyone have the abcs for the version of The Blackthorn Stick in this file? It’s different than the one I learned and what is on the session.org or what JC’s abc Tune Finder comes up with.

The Maid at the well and the Blackthorn Stick are alternative names for this tune. Broderick seems to be using a mix of two versions. Here’s an outline:
