I am, as many of you know, a confirmed flute monogamist in spite of having several dozens of flutes in my possession at any given moment (occupational hazard).
I am utterly devoted to my keyless blackwood McGee GLP with the nifty C-nat thumbhole.
But I have a lovely purpleheart 6-key (black keys) Reviol here that’s causing me some trouble. There seems to be something wrong wiith my elbows…can’t seem to straighten them out so that I can put the thing down. See it has this cool one-piece body so there’s none of the worries putting it together or taking it apart and bunging the keys accidentally. Also the short F doesn’t bug me (a rarity for me in a keyed flute).
Now, I would certainly never part with my GLP as I live for that dark, wonderful GLP tone. But this one has that brighter, wonderful Rudall-y tone…and keys! I’ve been playing all the tunes I’ve been fudging accidentals on with the keys and it’s vaar naace.
Anyway, I could use a little moral support with my monogamy here guys. I’ve been saying for years that I don’t need keys and don’t want two flutes. Help!
Well, there are keyed flutes, and then there are keyless flutes, and seeing as you have only one of each, I don’t see any contradiction to your policy.
After all, we’re talking apples and oranges, here.
Besides, Doc, what have YOU done to help me with MY flute fidelity issues? Hah! Fat on the fire, I’d say. I’ll be moving to Utah soon, with mates like you.
Sorry to hear of your plight, Patrick-but you knew this was a dangerous occupation to get into, didn’t you? Sooner or later…it’s bound to happen when you play with fire…or flutes!
Just give in now-it will hurt less, and then you can concentrate on just playing it! And as I’ve heard somewhere before…we can all write emails to your wife to tell her how necessary a keyed flute is to musical growth, etcetera, if it will help. ; )
Delighted to hear that, Doc. I had decided to hang on to my Reviol a bit longer, but since you have broached the subject I feel compelled to commit commerce.
For you people who have not been able to pry the flute that Doc loves so well from his hard-working hands, I can offer you its sister: a gorgeous six-key Reviol made of Honduras rosewood, less than two years old, like new, in the deluxe case that Maurice provides. Fantastic open sound, great volume, in perfect tune. A wonderful flute than which you will need no better.
The price will be just $1,600. Shipping, Paypal fees will be extra. But not a lot extra.
A population of old time Mormons preaching polygamy
Intimations of “It’s alright, adultery is fine as long as it’s not always with the same person”
and finally 4) A Devilesque figure tempting the faithful with Faustian wares.
It would make a great novel if it hadn’t already been written…
Send me the flute, and I’ll keep it safe for you here.
Then, no matter how badly you “Jones” for the thing, no matter how many times you entreat me to return it, no matter what you threaten, I’ll protect you from yourself.
Cocus,
Why do you do this to me? Your price for a Reviol keyed flute is an outstanding deal!! My only consolation is that I just took delivery of a 4 key Brazilian Kingwood from Maurice. Take a look at the top set of photos on Maurice’s photo gallery: http://www.reviol.co.nz/HTML/Thumbnails.html
It’s a great sounding flute and fits in well with the rotation…of Olwells, McGees, Hamiltons, Murrays, etc. Reviol is one of the most underrated and unknown of the top makers.
Doc,
Don’t inflict torture on yourself. Keep the flute.
