Vignoles reed dimensions

Has anyone out there got dimensions for a Vignoles chanter reed?

I take it, you have not got the old one that was oringinaly in the chanter, his reeds are not unlike the Rowsome style, 48-51mm x 4mm ID. staple, reed head width 12.80-13.00mm, slip thickness 1.4mm, finished reed length 79-81mm, I think his early Concert D chanters used 3.4mm ID brass tubing if I recall right, :confused: but it been a few years since I reeded a Vignoles Concert chanter,
Hob Goblin did stock some of his chanters, if there’s a shop near by pop in for a look at one,surely some one on this forum has a Vignoles Concert chanter, come on guys, get the tape measure out, :poke: all the best with your reed venture.

I believe the generic Rowsome design reed (David Daye’s PC reeds) will work.

I had a student that ruined his reed and I made the mistake of loaning him my Daye reed until he learned to make one and he vanished after the staple rolling lesson. :sniffle:

My reedmaking notes should give you some ideas.

I emailed Michael, only this week with that exact same question.

His answer:
“The dimensions you need are as follows
Staple length 53 mm give or take a mm
head width very important 13 mm
head length 48
if you can measure the overall length to be 3 inches to 3 1/4
Staple tube 3//16 dia
keep the eye of staple small rather than large approx 1 mm gap to 1 and a
half mm”

Charlie,

I have 5 chanter reeds that Michael made for me when he brought my chanter over.

My favorite chanter reed:

Overall reed length is: 3.16-3.96 " (80-100mm); avg. 3.3" (85mm)
Reed head width: 0.48-0.55" (13.0-13.9 mm); avg. 0.51" (13.1 mm)

The staples are brass tubing, 4mm ID. Unsure of staple length. (I have an email to him asking for staple length)

Use the edit button and check the number of tags. The board script will sometimes add an extra close tag which messes it up.
