A recent thread regarding what first got people interested in the whistle prompted me to search for an appropriate video clip of the man who first inspired me - Spider Stacy.
To my surprise and delight, I found several full length videos digitized by other fans.
It was Spider’s whistle playing in these old Pogues videos that first grabbed my attention… too bad it took me another 15+ years to actually get a whistle and begin learning to play! ![]()
Since most of you are on dial-up connections, I just cut out the clip of Spider’s whistle part from the ‘Dirty Old Town’ video so everyone can enjoy it.
This will be a trip down memory lane for many of you, and an introduction to both Spider Stacy and The Pogues for many more who have never heard of either one.

The clip is just under 4mb, and is ZIPped because media files don’t fare very well for some unknown reason on the server I uploaded it to.
You’ll need WinZIP or another suitable program to unarchive it unless you have ‘Compressed Folders’ installed on a Windows PC, and a video player capable of handling WMV (Windows Media Video) files in order to view it.
Anyone with a broadband connection can contact me for the full video and a few more if you’re interested.
Regards,
Gary Humphrey
