Very old Generation on eBay?

There’s an unusual looking Generation on eBay right now, here’s the URL - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=866817601. Does anyone know how old this type of Gen is, and how well it might play? Just wondering, I’ve never seen a Gen like it before.

I don’t know about the whistle, but isn’t the current high bidder on the same server as the undisputed? I’ll be watching this one closely.

This must be one serious Generation, it’s already up to $51 with almost 3 days to go! Anyone seen one like it before?

That wasn’t me that bid. Wish it was. That’s a beautiful, beautiful item. I’d bid $100 for it if I had $100 lying around.

(sigh)

Dale

Is that the kind people have mentioned as having a lead fipple? -brett

I know that they had lead fipples for quite some time. So, this one could contain lead.

Not sure who Schmedegar is, but it isn’t Dale’s eBay code unless he’s just rejoined under a different name. Both of the recent bidders are eBay newcomers.

It really is a Generation, could be '20s or even earlier and yes, it probably does have a lead fipple plug. That shouldn’t worry you. There’s a way to insulate yourself from contact with the lead - nail polish.

At $50+ it’s higher than we’ve seen them go before, but where are you likely to find another one, especially in such pristine condition? $100? Maybe - value is what an informed buyer is willing to pay a willing seller. I’m out of this one, though. Too rich for my otherwise willing blood.

I would imagine that putting nail polish, or any other product, on an antique whistle, would depreciate its value significantly. If you bought this whistle, would it be to play/perform on, or to have as the unusual antique it appears to be?

Easy to remove nail-polish, ain´t it?

So in the end it wouldn´t affect anything but the health of the player , on the other hand, how healthy can it be to suck on nail-polish all day long!

Geez - Louise, people, this went for over $242.00 !!! Anybody know who purchased it?

Well…It wasn’t me. I have probably paid way too much for a few of my whistles…but thats more than I would go. I hope for the sake of who ever bought it thats its not a fake or anything.

All of which goes to demonstrate that, when the auction of an old whistle is mentioned on Chiff & Fipple, the only sure winner is the seller. That having been said, it was one fine looking old axe, weren’t it?

Tom D.

I dropped the winner an email asking if they would let us know what its like when they receive the whistle. I hope they drop in and post!

lol…I dropped the winner a post too…kind of a email interview lol
