Velvet Elvis Paintings...What's Up With That?!

Can someone please explain the association between Elvis and velvet paintings? I just asked an Elvis fan(atic) here at work, and she had no clue. Oh, and yes, she owns a velvet Elvis painting herself.

I’d say it’s just that often Elvis fanatics have certain styles of decor which tend to appeal to them as a group, and velvet paintings, while tacky to many, fit the overall Graceland theme.

It has to do with the type of lye they use to make hominy.

What’s the Graceland theme? Did Elvis have velvet paintings?

You only just noticed?

I have not been to Graceland. But I’ve heard enough about it to imagine velvet paintings fitting in nicely.

:boggle:

Elvis has left the Gallery.

Nobody in their right mind would deny the contribution that Elvis made to popular music. His voice was one of the all time great voices and he came at a time when the world was ready for somebody to represent the changing times.
People like Bob Dylan,Joni Mitchell,Neil Young,Lou Reed,Paul McCartney,John Lennon, blah, blah… have made a far greater contribution to popular music as we know it today yet we never see any Velvet paintings of them.
I have seen tattoo’s of Elvis lovingly sketched onto the backs of people,I’ve seen loads of people who model their appearence on Elvis,I’ve even seen churchs dedicated to his memory. We have all seen weird and bizzare tributes to Elvis but I have yet to see any such worship attached to some of the people mentioned above.
What is it about Elvis that brings out this kind of behaviour in people?
There’s not a lot scares me but Elvis fans come close.

Only he could dress like Liberace, wiggle his tush, and still exude machismo.

From Men in Black, “You do know Elvis is dead?”… “Nah, he just went home.”

He wasn’t the only one…

I do my best to be open and tolerant, but this is one phenomena I have never been able to grasp. One of my dearest friends was a fan(atic), though she would certainly not have ahd a velvet painting of him, she did a wonderful silverpoint drawing of a composit of Elvis images… incredible work… I thought he was good, and even a good actor, but I did not see anything worthy of worship… ah well… I am hard to convince on that aspect of idolitry anyway.

Not in the same league, D. Jimi was a hippie-style clothes horse, and he didn’t wiggle that I recall. Elvis was a cultural anomaly from the backwoods.

Hmmm…should that have been “aN hippie”?

Hmmm…should that have been “aN hippie”?

No.

You go by the sound, so “a hippie” or “an honest hippie” are both correct.

Not so fast, there, bud. It’s correct (if a bit ivory tower) to say “an historical thingamajig”. Or at least it’s not incorrect.

Maybe that’s a carryover from British speaking where they would drop that H.

So what is it about Velvet Elvises and historic thingamajigs? :boggle:

While it’s obvious to everybody I know that I’ll never rate a velvet painting like Elvis (thank goodness), it is intirely possible that at some point I could be referred to as an historic thingamajig (or at least an old fart).

. . . A well I bless my soul
What’s wrong with me?
I’m itching like a man on a fuzzy tree
My friends say I’m actin’ wild as a bug
I’m in love
I’m all shook up
Mm mm oh, oh, yeah, yeah! . . .

New band name! “Velvet Elvis”. It’s got a ring to it.

HA! I love it. Now if I can just find my long sideburns.

Too late.

Velvet Elvis
by Weird Al Yankovic

My life, it used to be incomplete,
Till I saw what I was looking for at a drive-in swap meet.
My life it won’t be the same again.
Now I’m proud to say the king lives on inside my den.
Oh, it’s all I live for, it’s all I need.
My velvet Elvis,
My velvet Elvis.
My velvet Elvis means the world to me.
Although he may not be worth much dough,
He means much more to me than some old Rembrandt or Van Gogh.
Check out those sideburns, there is nothing greater.
You can tell that he’s no velvet Elvis imitator.
It’s all I live for, it’s all I need.
My velvet Elvis,
My velvet Elvis.
My velvet Elvis,
Oh, now you can’t you see,
My velvet Elvis,
My velvet Elvis,
My velvet Elvis means the world to me.
In my own private Graceland,
In my own little shrine to the king,
I don’t want nothin’ else.
No, I don’t need anything.
Don’t need no lava lamp,
Don’t need no soap on a rope,
No pictures of Mexican kids with those really big eyes,
Or dogs playing poker.
When I’m at home watching my TV,
I know the king is always looking down on me.
He looks so handsome, he stands so tall,
So glad he’s big enough to cover up that hole in the wall.
(Velvet Elvis) He’s so fuzzy.
(Velvet Elvis) He’s so great.
(Velvet Elvis) Never ages.
(Velvet Elvis) Never puts on weight.
(Velvet Elvis) Look at those rhinestones.
(Velvet Elvis) He’s just so fine.
(Velvet Elvis) You can look but don’t touch now.
(Velvet Elvis) 'Cause he’s mine all mine.
