...vacation...

Two inflatable canoes, two tents, backpacks with sleeping bags, food, clothes and all other stuff for autonomous raft in the plains of West Ukraine. Six tickets from Moscow to Kiev and from Kiev to Yuzhnoukrainsk.

This friday we’re leaving, and will be back in next monday. One week without any civilization - no cellphones, no electricity, no supermarkets - only your canoes, contents of your bags, sky, plains, and Southern Boh river.

I’m going there. At last.

…yes, I’m taking my tinwhistle with me  And there will be fiddle and guitar also - so we’ll have some music near our campfire in the evenings

Sounds delightful! Except for the scary rafting part.

I leave on my vacation in the wilderness in a week. I’m bringing my whistle, too. I hope it’s not too loud for the wilderness.

Well, not so scary as you might expect.
Southern Boh is rather big and slow river, and does not have too many “rafting” as you see it on TV. And rowing on canoe is easier then walking with a heavy backpack, believe me

do bring a well stocked patch kit…

did I mention that I hate inflatables?

Inflatables have one big advantage: our canoe (4 men, but only two are rowing) is only 15 kg. Being able to carry all your stuff yourself gives you freedom, and freedom is great

Yes, we’ll take both patch kit and extra inner tubes.

Have fun, Breqwas!

Have fun. Are you taking a camera?

“No phone, no lights, no motor car,
Not a single luxury…”

That sounds incredibly cool, breqwas! We did a trip like that last summer on the Bighorn River with inflatable kayaks. Pictures here. (at the bottom of the page)

Have a great time–we want a full report and pictures!

(and take it from me–if you’re doing inflatables, bring 4 times as many patch kits as you think you’ll need! :astonished: )

Tom

I’m back.

The river has swallowed three paddles, one t-shirt, one pair of shoes, one almost-new burke (the person who lost it was not me, and she’s still alive), and a piece of my heart.

Ukraine, I love you

Also there’s an ITM session in Kiev, and it is much better than in Moscow. Maybe I should move to Kiev?

Five pieces of free advice:

  1. Floating paddles.
  2. Keep your shirt on.
  3. sandals with buckles.
  4. cheap whistles.
  5. attach everything to the boat with caribiners and/or twine.

 Glad you had a great time! Do we get to see pictures, or did the river eat your camera too?

Tom

One day I am going to float away in my canoe and never come back.

1 more word of advice: Keep a dry well for cigarettes and other stuff that must stay dry. Keep the dry well dry.
