No bias intended, I even recommend Audacity for recording and editing in the same post on TradLessons where I talk about Transcribe as a practice tool.
But all this reasonable discussion is moot anyway now that billh has exposed himself as a Linux enthusiast, there is no arguing with religious zealots.
I’m kidding, really… We also do Linux drivers as well for all our devices because our customers (also zealots) demand it.
What I like about it is it has the nifty “library” on the left. I just add files, usually .mp3’s, to it and can save the resulting list as a File List that can be opened later. Make switching between songs really easy.
You’ll see that there is also “Start” and “End” slider that allow you focus in on a section and loop. This is handy but there isn’t a way to save this information so I use a handy thing called a Post-It note and a pencil. Not the quickest method but works fine.
“Stretch” is the speed of playback and “Pitch” is of course pitch. I have it set to play in B from a D recording.
I run ASD on a Mac and it works great. If it is crashing all the time, it simply does this if it isn’t registered. One you register it’s rock-solid. On my laptop I pretty have this and the Vocal Lab tuner always running.
ASD looks great, very clean interface, thanks for sharing that! I assume the Windows version has a similar UI?
Since they already have a Mac version, then there is hope that they’ll port it to the iPhone/iPod Touch platform since the SDK is supposed to make this sort of port fairly easy.
I forgot to mention that Transcribe! can also open most movie files, and do pitch/tempo adjustment on the audio while showing the video in a window, the frame rate on the video tracks the slowdown of the audio.
Great for figuring out technique from NPU and other piping videos, if you’ve already transcoded them to .mp4 or other format to watch on an iPod or other player. Works well with the .mp4 files now being posted on YouTube and other video sharing sites.
i spent about a 1/2hr making a ASD vid and trying to get it on Youtube. YT compressed the file and it’s missing some moves…ugh…just can’t spend any more time on this
well…you’ll have to take my word on it that it’s a quickie-diddly efficient program.
I’ve posted a video showing how to use Transcribe! to slow down videos as well as audio. This is great for working out tunes and techniques from instructional videos:
