I’ve just learned that the Dayton C. Miller collection at the Library of Congress will be launching an expanded website next month (January) that will contain photos of nearly all the 1,700 flutes in the collection.
Unbelievable piece of work.
Their photos are of stupendous quality, resolution and clarity. This will truly be a fantastic resource for researches and those of us who just like to drool over what’s in likely the biggest flute collection in the world.
Once I have the exact URL specifics for the new launch, I’ll pass it along for all to enjoy.
They’ve been good enough to share a number of photos with me over the years, including recent acquisitions of Camp/from/Rudall & Rose pictures soon to be on my own catalogue website.
Do you happen to know if they will be posting any of Miller’s photographic archives? The last time I was there I took a few nice pictures of pictures, including a great photo of RS Pratten himself. My picture of the original RSP picture hangs in my workshop, along with pictures of a few other instrument makers, my daughter, Ed Ricketts of Steinbeck fame, etc. and others who have inspired me. It would be great to see this archival material online as well as the pictures of the flutes.

As I understand, only photos of the flutes will be appearing (sans 100 of them, which they couldnt’ finish in time, but will later in the year).
The photographic and document archive (which is massive, as you know) is their next effort and likely won’t appear for quite some time.
I too have several RSPratten photos from DCM, including one a shot of Pratten (seating) holding a flute with a standing Rockstro (with piccolo) as a young man. Interesting.
