uilleann's in F

Hello,
I remember reading somewhere about a practice set that was made in the key of F for children to learn on. I think the comment was that it had a very “small pipe like tone.” Does anyone know the maker? or if this set is still in use? In general I’m very interested in unusual sets of pipes and just curious really.
Thanks,
Patrick

I have seen them made by Leo Rowsome, and heard that Alain Fromont has made at least one.

I own a Froment chanter in F and bag and bellows to match. While the chanter is perfect for a child, the bellows is a little large in comparison…design error I guess. Its a wee little thing. Kinda toy-like when side-by-side next to my Koehler and Quinn B chanter.

Could someone possibly post a recording of an F set? I’d love to hear it. Are there any E or Eb chanters? My first chanter I made ended up Eb because I muffed up on the reed.

Rumor has it that Joe McKenna has a chanter reeded to play near E flat. Must be one (of the many) reasons I can’t be satisfied with my attempts to play along while spinning his CD’s!!!

Hello glands,
What does your chanter sound like in general, ‘small-pipe-like’, or like a loud harsh uilleann or somewhere in between?
I don’t know if Froment is still making pipes or accepting orders, anyone know?
Thanks for the earlier replies,
Patrick

Really, it sounds like nothing else in piping. It is more of a novelty although it does indeed make music. I cannot imagine that one would want one for any reason other thatn the use by a 6-10 year old child.

Lewis,

This begs the question, what are you doing with it? (you were considerably past 10 last time I saw you  )

Well, no E, you are well aware of my immaturity and need to play with toys. Seriously though, I posted a note on NPU site interested in an F or G chanter for my daughter. Eight mos later, a lad form Eire contacts me with the set for sale.

hey Lewis,

do you have a sound file of it anywhere?

no sound files…you really don’t want to go there. If you can imagine ton eof the tiny F whistles and then imagine a double reed sounding in its place as you play the instrument.
