Last weekend when I passed my oldest daughters room, I stopped for a few seconds as I over heard an uilleann track on her CD player.
She is only eight, and usually we get to hear a crazed mix of Artic Monkeys, Tokio Hotel,The Ark, Brittney Spears and Pink,
but so far never folk or ITM, unfortunately.
As I stood there listening, trying to figure out what CD she had snapped from my collection I realized that this wasn’t one of mine, some ethno rock with a fiddle and a piper, quite catchy.
So I had to peek in and ask her what it was and she proudly presented this new great album that she had borrowed from the kid next door.
Nightwish!
Good thing is that we now can say that we both like uilleann pipe music, and now I also know what tune to learn to
impress her friend next time he visits
Troy Donockely also plays pipes on my brother-in-laws band’s music. His band is Magenta , prog rock. I’ve also asked Troy for a lesson which he said he will next time he’s in Wales. What a nice bloke !!
After returning from the East Coast Tionol last weekend I now know how to interest my teenage sons in ITM, at least tangengially. I was showing one of them some of the concert video I shot, when it got to Loiuse Mulcahy he suddenly paid a lot more attention and exclaimed “why didn’t you take me!”
I told him that she could be one our guest pipers at a future Tionol so he better take up the pipes or she wouldn’t speak to him
In all seriousness, Ms. Mulcahy was an extremely charming and witty young lady - and a tremendous piper and teacher. I think that young pipers like her can be a great inspiration to the next potential generation of pipers. A lot more inspiring to them than a bunch of dour old geezers with excessive nose and ear hair, smelling of whiskey and cane dust.
Marcus, I hope your daughter becomes Sweden’s next piping sensation!
