If it’s haunting you want, and it doesn’t have to be Irish, one of the prettiest and most haunting melodies I know of is Hatikva.

A truly “haunting” version of Dunmore Lasses can be heard on the Chieftan’s Long Black Veil Album. It’s played with Ry Cooder , Truly haunting. And easily picked up by ear. You can play along with the recording on a Bb whistle if I remember right.
Try “Come by the hills”. One of the previous posters also listed a great tune called “I am sleeping”. This is usually found under it’s Irish title, “Taimse im Chodhladh”. That’s the way it’s listed in one of the Whistle and Sing books.
I’ll add – “she’s like the swallow” – not an Irish tune, (Canadian I think), but absolutely beautiful. I learned it from Karan Casey’s album ‘Songlines’, but I think it is quite well known.
“An Feochan” by Kevin Crawford. I want to say that it is on Lunasa, Otherworld. But I have a hunch that I might be wrong.

The closest Irish whistler I know of is closer to you, in the bay area, and that is our own Tony Higgins. We played together a couple times.

Some of your suggestions I have already learned..Ghile Mear, Foggy Dew. And I have the Mel Bay book, but now it has little stars beside your suggestions, so I have an idea where to start.

Caoineadh Cú Chulainn from Riverdance is a wonderful piece, and fairly easy to play. In the show, it’s played on Uillean pipes, but it sounds every bit as good on a low-D whistle.
Women of Ireland, from the Legends album with James Galway and Phil Coulter. (sheet music is out there for this album, which has both the flute and piano sections.)
Green Fields of France, My only problem with this one is making it through without breaking into tears. Very pretty tune, and easy to play on the whistle, but if you’re paying attention to the lyrics while you play, it’s got to be one of the saddest songs I’ve heard.

An Feochan is not on Lunasa, Otherworld; however, there is a great slow air on the beginning of track 4 called, January Snow.
An Feochan (Gentle Breeze) is by Tommy Peoples. The late Frankie Kennedy has a wonderful recording of it that can be found on one of the Altan Albums. Its on track 16 of the first disk of the Best of Altan Album.
