Tweaked LBW

I recently bought a tweaked LBW from Avery LeVine. His explanation of his tweaks is in this thread:

My Review:
Sound - This is a whistle with an airy “chiffy” sound. The tweaks have not changed this basic sound, but it is a bit more focused. I plays articulation easily and with a nice pop to the sound.

Tuning - Here is a big difference. I have a Walton Guiness Whistle which is out of tune all over the whistle. The tweaked LBW is well in tune with itself - up and down - and, with adjustments to the head, in tune period. The Cnat is in tune using a oxxxox, but is a little weak. If I were playing a song that needed a Cnat long tone, I would want to switch.

Appearance - It is obvious from looking at the instrument that there was work done to the finger holes. Each one has “silver” alumuinum showing around the edge and the R2 hole is irregularly shaped. I’m assuming this was done to correct the tuning. This does not get in the way of playing the whistle. Also, the large “Avery Tweaked” sticker covers part of the original yellow Walton sticker. I know picky, picky - these things are not that important to me, but some people are into the visual esthetics - I wanna play it not look at it.

Summation - To me, the untweaked LBW is a “not very good” whistle - or at least a “not good consistantly” whistle. (apologies to those LBW lovers). These tweaks have changed this into a good quality whistle. It won’t be replacing anybodies high end favorites, but when you want some of that old type, chiffy sound - this whistle could be the one for you.

Sorry - I’m not set up for photos.
Thanks Avery!

Thanks for the review Doogie. I would say it is likely to have variation between the two Whsitles reviewed as these are out of the box inconsitient. What is the general opinion ot the Silver showing through I like it but some people have shown a dislike and I would like to know what most people think so I culd come up with a solution.

I would be willing to bet that most people want their tweaked whistle to look like the original. Grab a black Sharpie and make your customers happy!

Well I tried the sharpie and it makes it look more like the original but it is pretty easy to tell with a close look.

Avery, did you get my email? I sent it to the one that the button at the bottom of your posts sends it to.

I don’t know… when Glen Shultz started making his Water Weasels,
he left the plumbing code on the PVC. He said that he started stripping
the writing off because one guy emailed him and said it looked
unprofessional (I tried to find the page where he mentions this, but
thinweasel.com doesn’t contain the same content anymore). I know a
large number of people who like the writing very much. It’s hard to
please everyone.

I actually like the contrast of the aluminum, at least in the pictures on
Steven’s review (I haven’t seen the whistle in person, yet). I definately
don’t want a tweaked whistle to look exactly like the original. I was very
disappointed when the “Jerry Freeman tweaked” sticker eventually
wore off my tweaked SweeTone.

Yes, I did and I replied with why things were certain ways. Fearfaoin I agree about the contrast but everyone else has show dislike so from now on I will be putting some sharpie around the holes.

shrug The masses have spoken. Perhaps when you take orders you
can mention the option of leaving the contrasting silver if the person
wants, and if they don’t specify a preference, go with the sharpie as a
default…

Does the sharpie stay on the metal, even with fingers constantly
rubbing against it?

It stays on but I have not layed the two that have it enough to see how long it will last.
