I purchased my first tin whistle yesterday. I do not have access to a tutor and require advice on the best quality self teaching tutorial material available.
In addition I am a late learner in life at 33 yrs. Is this to late to aquire a sound knowledge of the instrument and the correct fingering techniques.
Regards
Darrin
Welcome! IMO one of the best tutorial book/CD’s you can get is Bill Ochs’ The Clarke Tin Whistle (works with any whistle in D despite the name). I would not recommend Step One: Teach Yourself Pennywhistle (book/CD/video) - IMO it progresses too quickly, makes too many assumptions, and does not offer enough explanation. Best of luck
Oh, there are free resources on the net including Brother Steve’s website (which is awesome). I can’t recall the URL but I’m sure someone else could post it.

Please be reassured you are a mere stripling compared to other late whistle-starters on C&F, including me.
Try Dave Auty’s site for help starting out http://www.whistleworkshop.co.uk/
This would be a good candidate for the matrix, people ask for good tutors every month or so, and we all have our favourites.
Here’s a few links to get you started: My advice is to get something with a CD or video so you get the sounds, not just the sheetmusic. The rest is just down to putting in the practise.
good luck and welcome! Martin

I’ve been developing an online whistle tutorial, but its not all up yet. I do have the fingerings for about four tunes online, though, at:
http://free.gentle.org/users/gospelhymns/Whistle/Tabs.htm
It’s a work in progress.
P.S. The last tune on the page, Eternal Father Strong to Save, is the hymn sung in the movie Titanic. Some survivors of the Titanic actually reported that this was the tune played as the ship sunk, rather than Nearer My God to Thee.
quia si confitearis in ore tuo Dominum Iesum et in corde tuo credideris quod Deus illum excitavit ex mortuis salvus eris —Rom. X,9.

I’ve been working on a tutorials section of the WhistleAnnex, and also on the Matrix. This is admittedly still a work in progress, but there are several tutorals with reviews listed, and Im working on adding the online tutorials.
Hard copy tutorials/CDS are listed at:
http://www.geocities.com/whistleannex/Tutors.html
Past threads regarding tutorals can be found in the Matrix..the main index for the Matrix is:
http://www.geocities.com/whistleannex/Matrix001.html
I hope this helps

A note to everyone: if you have a tutorial book/CD set not listed and want to submit a review, I will be happy to include it in the Annex. If you have a review of one of the online tutorials, these also would be appreciated for submission, since I have not yet had an opportunity to work through all of them, yet it would be helpful to have a complete listing now. I’ve already received on tutorial review (thanks Whistlin’Dixie).
