Tuning Susato Low D whistle

Hi fellow whistle binkies,
I was playing around with a computer program to try and tune my flute, and I thought, well surely my trusty Susato will be in pitch… I found that it was tuned to A=450.
It was tuned the same as my 1820’s flute! I found that I have to pull out the fipple half way to make it A=440. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it designed to be tuned either way, sharp or flat?
It really is a fine playing whistle I was just curious why it was tuned like this.

Jon

Jon,
If the whistle would be tuned to 440 A (1st oct)with the slide all the way in then 2nd oct A would sound flat.Try pushing the slide in a bit more and blow a little softer in 1st oct.I personaly like to here `A´ pitched slightly higher than 440 in relation to the other notes but this is largely a matter of taste.I hope this helps. Peace, mike

Hi Mike,
Thanks for your help, I like The sound of A+30cents to it is more cheerful.
I will run some tests with the higher octave to see if it is different.
Ever new Joy,
Jon
