Tune of the fortnight 15/03/2012 - Scatter the mud

No moderators have told me not to do this, and there has been some mild interest in the idea, so here goes.

This is the first tune of the month - well actually, of the first fortnight of the month. A month is a bit long to keep up the fear, imo. I came up with some simple rules.

  1. All entries must be in by the day before the date declared in the title.
  2. On the declared date, the person who started the thread will comment on entries and nominate his favourite.
  3. The nominated favourite will choose and judge the tune for the next two weeks.

The tune should be easy to find on the internet in performance and score/ABC. Anything goes. Sing it in the shower, play it lugubriously on Souzaphone or merrily on the high G whistle. Play it approved ITM style or like Karajan conducting Mahler. Enjoy yourselves!

The tune is Scatter the Mud. Entries in by 14/03/2012 and I will nominate my favourite on 15/03.

Good tune. I understand the necessity of passing the torch around, but kind of a shame it has to make it a competition. Might actually add a certain something though.

Just as a reference here’s a couple versions.

Hmm, I’m really not a fan of that whistle version though. Or the fiddle now that I listen. No offence meant to anyone.

Wanderer- Just basic reference. I was looking for the tune played slow, I don’t expect anyone would believe either of those examples is the best the it could be.

I just think that stylistically that whistle playing is very misleading. He doesn’t seem particularly familiar with how ITM tunes are supposed to sound.

how about:

different name - Doran’s Fancy

Lunasa do a version they called Noonday Feast.

it seems to me there is already an apparent and inherent danger, so to speak, in finding and posting examples of the tunes… instead of a “gee, thanks for finding an example” we see a critique of the playing or the player or of the style or simply an “i don’t like that one.”

maybe some thought could be given to making the finding of the tune part of the challenge… each participant should find the version they wish to use without posting it…

then, less time is spent discussing the various merits, or lack thereof, of a given tune performance, and more time might be spent learning the tune… in the end, we may all be blessed with a wide variety of settings for the given tune of the fortnight.

be well,

jim

I like that Jim.

It’s amazing how much reverb you can get from a tree.

I’m sorry if you feel that’s what I led the thread down, and normally I really wouldn’t post something like that, but in this particular case, I think it’s fairly outside the realm of what trad sounds like, ahh traditionally.

If someone was making an effort (no matter how beginnerish) to sound a bit more traddy, I wouldn’t say anything, not least because I’m not a particularly good player myself.

Nice tune selection.
I’m not familiar with it though, and I think I’ll pass on trying to learn it just yet.
Are these the notes?

(You’ll have to look up 'Scatter the Mud #1".)

Very much looking foward to listening to everyones tunes!

That’s one of those things. I have always known ‘Noonday Feast’ connected to another tune, also known as ‘The Cow that ate the Blanket’ while the tune Lunasa plays (I had to look it up on session.org) is one I have always known as ‘John Egan’s #2 after the Sligo/Dublin fluteplayer. First time I saw ‘Scatter the Mud’ as a name connected to that one (although the connection as a version of.. was always obvious)was on Tommy McCarthy’s CD. Have actually recorded that version myself but not sure now how I named it on the CD. Prefer to think of the other version (say the Willie Clancy one) as ‘scatter the Mud’.

Confusion all round now ofcourse.

I think it’s a great idea

Sorry, folks, but I’m afraid there was a miscommunication and mis-timing between the OP and the Mods regarding this “contest”, which will require Mod discussion and approval before it proceeds. So we’re locking this topic temporarily while that discussion is under way. Thanks for your understanding.
